Recusant rolls for Middlesex 1603-1625
« on: Friday 07 May 10 22:51 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters
I got a bit carried away in Oxfam today and bought the above book - to justify its purchase (I don't as far as I know have any relatives in this position) I would be happy to do a look up.

Dear Dawn
This book - by John LaRocca, SJ (Catholic Record Society Vol 76) is a translation into English of the Recusancy Rolls (originally in Latin). So it contains the names and occupations of people who were fined for recusancy, often huge fines.  It's fully indexed so easy to use, from 1603 - 1625.  So could be really useful to people who find that the parish registers are proving unhelpful and suspect their rellies might be recusants (i.e Roman Catholics).  People who were fined cover all ranks of society from shoemakers to lords and ladies.
