William and Frances Thomas Whitehaven after 1901
« on: Saturday 08 May 10 15:30 BST (UK) »
My 2xgreat uncle William Thomas was living in Flimby in 1891 and also in 1896 when he married Frances Mary Sanders in Keswick. They were both living at 69 Church St, Whitehaven in 1901. After that date I have been unable to find any trace of them. William was born in 1866 in North Wales. With such a common name it is not easy to find a death record for him. The 1911 census has proved fruitless - either he died before then or left England and Wales. ( or the census record could be mistranscribed).
Do these names mean anything to anyone? Did they have any children? Love to hear from anyone who could tie up these loose ends for me. NellieT

Something for you to eliminate if nothing else.

I found a Wm and Frances M Thomas on a passenger list in 1918, trying to follow dates and the times they say they have been in Canada before put them in Canada for the 1911 census.

Looking on the 1911 Canadian census I found this couple.

William Thomas 45 born Wales (January 1866 birth date) 1903 date of immigration
Francis M Thomas 41 born England. (July 1869 birth date) 1904 date of immigration

They are in Haliburton Street, British Columbia, Nanaimo.

They have these people lodging with them, Thomas Charles, James and Samuel Gregory.

Thank You! I believe these are the right couple as the ages and places of birth match. I looked on the passenger lists on findmypast but couldn't find them. I assume there were no children with them. Another mystery solved. Thanks again tressle. Regards Nelliet

Hi, no children with them on the census.

This is the shipping list I found.

Frances M Thomas, aged 49, born in England, arriving November 1st 1918 on the Makura, Arriving Vancouver British Columbia, left from Auckland, New Zealand.

With her is a Wm Thomas aged 52 born England - then were it says have you been in Canada before they have said yes, 1915? not sure about these dates - where - BC (which I presume is British Columbia), how long - 11 and 12 years.

ADDING - This could be Francis Mary

Mrs F M Thomas, aged 34 from the county of Cumberland, on the ship Lake Manitoba, arriving Montreal 2 September 1904. Departed from Liverpool

Hi Tressle, Thanks for all the extra information. Frances was born in July 1869 and William was born Jan 1866 so there is no doubt that this is the couple. They certainly got around the world if they had been in New Zealand and Canada. I have been looking for them since I got their marriage certificate in October so this is a great breakthrough. Yes, even I am convinced after finding the passenger list - I believe William is on a passenger list in 1903 so that has tied it all in.

Hi, Thanks to your input I have now found their deaths. Frances Mary Thomas 16 Feb 1931 Nanaimo age 61 and William Thomas 1 Mar 1936 Nanaimo age 70.
Now I have to tell all the family...It looks like they settled in British Columbia after their travels to New Zealand. NellieT
