Phew.. you are a genius! My Ralph Dunn & Elizabeth Clegg were indeed married on 18 Aug 1840 in St Mary Parish Church Newington - I have the certificate; and the 2 younger children would have been chargeable
1861 RG09/354/50/12 9 Saunders St [Poor. 18s. to 21s. a week for a moderate family on Booth's poverty map.] aged 56 born Ireland as Dunne provision dealer with Elizabeth aged 41 with John aged 14, Sarah aged 10 & Alice aged 7

Thank you so much, I will send for that Charles' 1861 death certificate & report back.

As the settlement examination states 'Ex[aminee] does not belong' does that mean she did not get relief? She is most likely from Huddersfield.

Hi Josey
That is a tricky question.
2 children chargeable, never paid rates (or is it rents?), not apprenticed (I think!), in parish 10 years

Doesn't belong. Perhaps she wasn't eligible for relief in Lambeth then. I'm still not sure! I notice that the exam of Elizabeth is a year after her husband died, so presumably she had managed to get by until then. If there is anything else I will try and dig it out, but I'm not too confident there will be.

I do think the certificate looks promising as others with the same page reference seem to have been buried at that same cemetery around mid May. So good luck with that!
John

.pdf applied for!

I made out that after 'Husband was 57' it says 'He never appd' & wondered if it meant 'He never applied' ie for relief? Then 'He has no relations'. Then it is Ex[aminee] who 'does not belong' & 'has been in residence 10 yrs'.

ADDED: Ralph & Elizabeth's last child was William Charles 1859 - 1859 - died of smallpox at 5 months. However his death is registered the same day by Elizabeth as Charles William, so she did mix up names in times of stress.

Hi
Yes, you may be right there. If they could have only have written up those exams with a little more care! It's the two children chargeable that I wonder about, chargeable to where? I presumed to Lambeth. It's the husband's place of settlement that is important, perhaps then he hadn't acquired one in Lambeth.

Something else has turned up!
Records for Princes Road Workhouse
Charles Dunn in 1861, and I think it confirms the date of death
May be on ancestry somewhere, but here it is

Oh that has to be good, thank you so much. Can't have been too many bacon driers around.

Yes, Sarah [my g grandmother] & Alice were both born in Lambeth so would be chargeable.

Here are the details from th edeath certificate:
9 May 1861 Charles Dunn @ Princes Rd Workhouse bacon drier; Chronic ulcer & Phthisis 2 wks certfd informant E J Elliott in attendance.
The known home address was given in the  settlement for Elizabeth Dunn given by John in reply #9 together with same date of death given in reply #14 so I know this is actually Ralph James. So thank you again, John, for solving a long standing question.

"Might be buried at Lambeth Cemetery

I think this record is actually for West Norwood Cemetery (which is in Lambeth). When I look up graves that I have photographed in WNC, that is how they are listed on familysearch.
