Alfred Winfield born c.1851
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 20:24 BST (UK) »
Hi. My GG Grandfather Alfred Winfield was born in Windsor, Berkshire between 1851 and 1853. There is a discrepancy between the 1881 census and his marriage certificate in 1879!

On his marriage certificate (to Priscilla Comley) his father is lsted as David Winfield (deceased) and witnessed by Albert Winfield

But I cant find any trace of David Winfield or Albert Winfield

Any help appreciated

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Priscilla (indexed as Winefield) is in lodgings in 1881 - no Alfred

Alfred was a mariner living in Wales in 1891 - aged 39 so birthyear 1852 birthplace Windsor

Not with family in 1901

The only 1871 entry I can find was an Alfred Winfield b 1852 soldier b Edelin Berkshire

The only freebmd entry is this one

Births March qtr 1851

Alfred Winfield Wallingford  6 296

There is no David Winfield in Berks in 1851

thanks Carole

Ive also been through those records, and have requested Alfred's birth certificate on that same reference.

Just really stuck getting beyond Alfred

On the marriage certificate Alfred'd father's occupation was listed as "Gentleman" which strikes really odd!

Are you also looking at the Winfield line?

Thanks for the speedy response tho!

Hi

No connection to the Winfields I'm afraid.  I have a feeling that Alfred was  illegitimate.

That Wallingford birth reg is probably the Alfred Winfield born to parents Silas & Eliza (nee Munday) who are on the 1851 census living in the Wallingford registration district with a 3month old son Alfred

The Wallingford Alfred has already lead me down a path or two

Just a possibility:

I searched the 19th century newspapers for "Alfred Winfield" and came across several reports of a case of child cruelty in 1868 for which a "respectable looking" lady named Charlotte Winfield, aged around 40-45, of Brighton was given 15 years in gaol. She had a son Alfred Winfield then aged around 15 who was also accused but was acquitted. The victim was the young son of her nephew who had been staying with her for a while. His home was in Boveney near Windsor and his mother was Eliza Tugwood (the nephew's widow). I think the deceased father of the child was a William Tugwood.

I haven't been able to find any previous record of a Charlotte Winfield with a son Alfred.  There's nothing to say that this is your Alfred, but I thought it worth noting because of the Windsor connection.

sorry Shaun, should have asked earlier, are these 19th Century papers searchable online?

Any chance you can send a link if they are?

Many thanks

You may be able to get free online access to the Gale/BL 19th Century Newspaper database via membership of a public library or an educational establishment . Not all libraries provide it but if you are in the UK you might try that. ( If your local library doesn't provide access, try Lancashire libraries ).

Alternatively you can subscribe http://newspapers.bl.uk/blcs/
