George b.1819 and Ann Elizabeth Horn (e) b.1826 Thame (marriage)
« on: Saturday 26 March 05 23:26 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the marriage of

Geroge Horn or Horne b. 1819 Greenwich, kent

and

Ann Elizabeth, b. Thame, Oxforshire  sorry I dont know her maiden name which is why I am looking for her marriage.

I am thinking that they were married at Thame as they have a son John Joseph Horne b. 1843 Thame, Oxfordshire.

They also have 7 other children but they are all born later in Poplar, London where the family seem to stay until my gt grandmother and gt grandfather were evacuated at the beginning of WWII.

Cheers Lisa

Hi Lisa,
A birth certificate for any one of the children would supply you with the mother's maiden name. I checked FreeBMD for a marriage 1840-1843, assuming that John Joseph was the firstborn. There are several possibles, but none in the Thame
District or anywhere in Oxfordshire.
Your best bet would be to find Ann Elizabeth's surname from a child's birth cert., then look for the marriage. If not in Freebmd, try    http://www.18370nline.co.uk/
( pay per view).
Once you have the District, Quarter(date)
Volume and Page, you can order the Marriage Cert. from the GRO   http://www.statistics.gov.uk/registration/certe_w/fees.asp

HTH,

Thank you Carmela perhaps you could take  look for the marriage in Poplar, London as this is where the rest of the children were born. Maybe Joseph was illagitamate and had a different father to the rest of the children.

They have just put him down as Horne on the census.

cheers Lisa

Lisa,
Sorry for the delay, I missed your reply. I did look in the London area for the marriage (FreeBMD covers the whole country, but is not yet complete). I found several "possibles"
but without the bride's surname, it is impossible to tell which
is the right George Horne or Horn. The only way is to find Ann Elizabeth's surname,  as I have already suggested; send for the birth cert. of one of the children. Then when you have her name, you can cross check with George Horne.
In FreeBMD there were no women with exactly the right first and middle names on the same page as a George Horne, which doesn't mean that she was not there. It is quite possible that her name was not exactly as you have seen on census records, it may be Elizabeth Ann or she may appear as just Ann or Elizabeth. There were a couple of Anns
and an Elizabeth on the same pages as two of the George Horns.
You can look at FreeBMD yourself:

                 http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/

Look there also for the birth registration of a child and order that certificate first.

Hope this is a bit clearer.
