TO CHRIS IN1066 RE 1891 Census lookup
« on: Wednesday 19 May 04 19:02 BST (UK) »
Hello again, you kindly looked up 1891 census for William Henry Avery  b1879c from Kennington.
unfortunately every thing tied in accept i didnt notice the obvious, it said LAMBETH as birth place ,not KENNINGTON.so these must be 2 different families.
would you be kind enough to see if there is another W.H Avery on the census
THANKS

It's not so unusual for stated birthplaces to change from census to census, so why are you insisting there *MUST* be another family?

What does it say in 1901?

1901 says Kennington and he has his own family that match up with a birth certificate of his daughter.
there is also another W H avery same age on 1901 born in lambeth

.. Fair do. Why didn't you say so to begin with?

Misha

You are starting to confuse the issue: - you stated that you had found them in the 1881 census and posted the following:

George avery b Lambeth surrey c1853
Annie  avery b Lambeth c 1857
Arthur chas avery b1878 Lambeth
William H Avery b 1879 Lambeth

Any more family in the 1891 census?

To which I replied with the following from the 1891 census:
Avery, A 34 Lambeth, London Wife  Lambeth  London
Avery, A 13 Lambeth, London Son  Lambeth  London
Avery, A 7 Lambeth, London Son  Lambeth  London
Avery, G 40 Lambeth, London Head  Lambeth  London
Avery, G 5 Lambeth, London Son  Lambeth  London
Avery, H 1 Lambeth, London Daughter  Lambeth  London
Avery, L 10 Lambeth, London Daughter  Lambeth  London
Avery, M 6 Lambeth, London Daughter  Lambeth  London
Avery, W 12 Lambeth, London Son  Lambeth  London

Now you are saying it is the wrong family because he should have been born in Kennington?
Why then did you say the 1881 you posted was the correct family?

Pauline - I do not appreciate you answering a posting that was clearly addressed to me - it would have been polite to let me answer it first before you added your two penneth.

Sorry, Chris, I was just going onto the next message down the board; not picking from the 'front page' of the board listings. I didn't bother to read the title.

In saying that, if you cannot found Misha's Kennington-born Avery in 1891 (or she in 1881?), is it a transcription error, or because he was being raised under another surname? He would not be the first to be raised under another man's name and revert to a birth surname when he left his mother's house.

Misha, Do you know if he was born out of wedlock, or did his mother (re?)-marry at some point between 1879 & 1881/1891? Any information on W H Avery's marriage certificate, is after all, only what the registrar was told at the time.

sory if im confusing matters but, om a little confused myself!
W H Avery marriage cert states that he was born to George Avery in Kenningtion.
1901 census states he was born in Kennington and even though the fathers name is correct on 1881 census as well as the correct profession ,i hadnt noticed the place of birth differs.ie Lambeth and as 1901 census states 2 w h averys, 1 from lambeth and 1 from kenningotn, i started to wonder if 1891 was the correct find.
i dont know if he his surname changed, it has never been mentioned.
