Looking for an illegitimate child in 1891
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 11:46 BST (UK) »
Ethel Cook born 11 July1886 in Nantwich (have birth cert) She would have been 5 years old and I am wondering if it is possible to find her in the 1891 census.  I have looked at many hoping to find her as a step daughter to someone.

Her mother Louisa Jane Cook had married John Whittingham in the Sep 1/4 of 1990 and in the 1891 they have a daughter Florence aged 2 months.

Where would I find the 1891 census for the workhouse in the area of Nantwich, Cheshire?

I'm struggling to see such a birth.  However, I can see a Sep qtr 1886 birth for an Ethel COOKE.  Is that the right child?

Louisa Jane seems to have been a COOKE when she married John WHITTINGHAM.

Sorry, I have just modified my post.  It was her mother who was a Domestic servant on the 1901.
And another apology there should be an E on Cooke this seems to have been added when her mother marrid.  All Louisa Jane's earlier relatives are COOK.  So that is the right child.
The only 1901 census I can find is RG13  3358  98  1
Ethel is a visitor to the Cross family which doesn't help a lot.

Thank you very much Stan.  Unfortunately she is not there.

How do you go about finding workhouses (anywhere) on the censuses?

To find the Workhouse on the census go to the 1891 census page and the box on the right
Browse this collection

County Cheshire
Civil Parish Nantwich
Enumeration District District Union Workhouse

Use the same process for other censuses
