There will be a lot of stuff not covered by copyright in the UK (copyright covers works for 7 years after the death of the author, and in the case of newspapers, the author would often not be traceable).

Thanks for that, mshrmh and Nick29.  I understand now about the scope of the project.

So it seems that many of those newspapers are not covered by copyright - so the Murdochs really have no right to be protesting about the vast majority of what is to be digitised (maybe only the recent stuff!)

Copyright varies from country to country and also on the item the copyright relates to. I thought that books in the UK it was 70 years after the death of the author and wondered whether the 7 was a typo.
