Clarborough
« on: Wednesday 19 May 10 14:13 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if any of you experts out there can help me.  I am researching the village public houses and their landlords over the years.  One of them is the Black Woman, but as it no longer exists am wondering where abouts in the village it was.  The Kings Arms is on the censuses and on some of the m it is next but one on the records.

How do you find out which order the censuses were taken, if they stayed oin the same side of the street or if the went from side to side.

Hi Emma, any research on pubs, even closed ones has to be encouraged.
Found it on the 1881 census on a website that may help you.

Hi skewbald, thanks for that info.  What I really needed to know is the route the ennumerator took through the village so we could ascertain where that particular pub was located. The Kings Arms is still there but not sure which side of the road the Black Woman was.

Thanks again for your info.

Emma, in 1891 the census shows the Black Woman and the Kings Arms with the post office in between, looking like they are all on Village street.  Village Street according to Google Earth now seems to be Main Street and the Post office and Kings Arms are still adjacecent. However the other side of the post office seems to now be fairly new build, so maybe the Black Woman was demolished.

Maybe it could be used to compare buildings still left.
