If you can turn up the record of the banns of the marriage it should say the parish of residence of both parties.

Thanks for that Redroger - that might help locate him - I am hoping to go to the relevant area sometime over the summer so here's hoping  :)

Hi Pebs,

The banns will only provide you with the parishes where the parties were resident 3 weeks prior to the marriage. If you are trying to find out where someone was born or living before this date the banns will not assist. The parishes identified in the banns, therefore, normally reflect the adresses in post-1837 marriage certificates.

Nigel
Essex - Burrell, Thorogood
Norfolk - Alcock, Bowen, Bowers, Breeze, Burton, Creamer, Hammond, Sparkes, Wakefield, Wiggett
North Devon - Burgess, Chalacombe, Collacott, Goss
Northamptonshire - George, Letts, Muscutt, Richardson
Somerset - Barber
Wiltshire - Brine, Burges, Carey, Gray, Lywood, Musselwhite, Perris, Read, Turner, Wilkins

The operative word of course Nigel being usually, this may be clutching at straws, but when there is nothing else straws it has to be.
