1871 Census & Earlier - Harper, Hull - COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 27 March 05 12:08 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I would be grateful for census information relating to the family of my great great grandmother Jessie Harper b. 1855 in Hull.  The only information I have was that her father was named as Charles Harper, whose occupation was given as Fisherman on Jessie's marriage certificate. Jessie's marriage took place in the parish of St. Mary & her residence was given as Broadley Street.

Many thanks in advance for any help received.

Angie

Sorry to disappoint but can't find a Charles Harper in the 1851 or 1861 complete with Jessie Harper which is an unusual first name.

There is only one family in Broadley Street in the 1861 Census for Hull St. Mary, and it is not Harper.

Maybe the family moved from Hull soon after 1851, perhaps to Grimsby, and then back to Hull again if they did of course.

Hi Angie

I can't see anything in 1871 either - any more clues?

Don't worry we'll get there in the end - just might be a bit less straightforward than some.  ;)

Best wishes

Hi

I haven't really got a lot to go on, this is one of my biggest brick walls!  I've got a suspicion that although Jessie was the name given on her marriage certificate it may not have been the name she was christened with.

The only additional information I have was that she married James Thurston, a widower 22 years her senior, in 1875.  His residence was also given as Broadley Street, perhaps they lived in the same home.  The witnesses were given as Ann Milner & Martha Thorp.

Many thanks again for taking the time to look for me, I do appreciate it  :)

Hi Angie

Thanks for the update.

Her husbands name James Thurston may help.  I'll have a look.

Best wishes

Thanks so much for your reply.

I've had problems finding info on this family, we always believed James was born in Hull also, the Scottish birth was a bit of a suprise but gives me a whole new avenue to explore!

Many thanks again.

Hi Angie

Woops!  I got it wrong.

I have corrected my posting above.  The image actually says James was born in Hull and that Jessie was born in Scotland.  It is a bit confusing as the lodger in the previous household is listed at the top of the Thurstons household and he wasborn in Scotland.  So I would take it with a pinch of salt!  ;D
