Hi Julie,
yes thanks, I managed to get down on Sunday to have a look around. Unfortunately there was no one about so didn't want to go poking about any of the older buildings, but I did manage to get some good photos. Looked like the farm had been lying unused for quite some time prior to who ever it was buying it.
Visited the grave yard too and found the 2 Armstrong head stones you kindly photographed for me. Felt very strange to be standing there and on the farm of my ancestors. Also visited the Near Boot on Bob's recommendation and had a great lunch   :)
Took a drive over to Oughterby as well, but wasn't so sure on which farm was which and couldn't find any head stones in the nearby grave yard. Next time I’m down I'll have to visit Holme Farm in allendale as well.
Such a beautiful area you live in and I imagine it was way back when also. A far cry from my other side of the family who grew up in industrial Coatbridge and worked in coal mines.

Just a thought Julie, but could you tell me who your local newspaper is so I can see if they have any digital archives please?

And thanks for all your help in finding Cross Hill for me :)

Hi Rob

Glad you enjoyed your visit.  Did you notice there was another daughter's name on the reverse of the gravestone nearest the church door?

The local papers were: The Patriot, The Journal, The Cumberland News and The Evening News and Star (last 2 are still in print).  As far as I am aware they are not stored digitally, but are on microfilm in the library.

Hi Julie,
you're more observant than me! I never noticed, or even thought to look on the back of the stone! Do you remember what the name was?
I'll probably made another visit at some point over the summer and have a look in yoru library. Just to see if there's any mention of the Armstrongs in the local papers of the time.

Cheers,
Rob

Hello Rob,
1851 is a bit late for the Margaret i am looking at. Do you know if there is another Cross Hill in Cumberland ?
I have a Margaret whose maiden name i don't know born about 1840 who says in the 1911 census that she was born at Cross Hill, Cumberland. In two previous census it was stated that she was born at Lanercost, Cumberland. In 1911 she was living alone and filled her place of birth in herself so i'm inclined to give it more credence. Do you know if Cross Hill is near Lanercost ?
Many thanks,
Kabeja.
