Crosshill is not an uncommon name in Cumberland.  There is also another not far away, near Irthington.  Coincidentally it is right next to Pateshill, the scene of a murder in the Mary Hogg thread which has been updated today.

There is also another one in Bewcastle Parish but that is a bit further away

Hello Steelos Mrs and Clearly,
Thank you both for your replies. I'll have to keep plugging away trying to identify the maiden name of Margaret. Possibly the only way to resolve it is to order the certificate for what may be the marriage and see who the grooms father name is.
Regards,
Kabeja.

While on the name Armstong may I ask if anyone can shed light on this man.
William Armstong - Maryport - hairdresser was the guarantor of the marriage licence of Thomas Baylis, mariner and Margaret Wright of Bowscales, Bromfield parish.
The marriage was at Crosscanonby 16/02/1805 and they then lived in Maryport.
Can anyone suggect what relationship there may have been between the couple and William Armstrong.
Thank you Humphpaul

The relationship may have been purely commercial, just as bail bondsmen operate in the USA today.  It was usual though for one of the parties or their family to be known to the guarantor because who would  put up money for someone they did not know.
