Hi

Hannah died 25th March 1901 at Oughterby, which is the Wigton area (I think), so might be able to find a link there.  When was the 1901 census taken?

just had a quick scan of 1901 census and there is a George Armstrong farming at Oughterby, born in Allendale in 1853.  There is also the same Isabella Bainbridge in the house as in 1891 census.

The census was taken a few days after Hannah died

Thanks guys,
I did find George (b. 1853) farming in Oughterby too. This would have been George & Hannah's son who must have moved from Cross HIll for some reason to farm in Oughterby, taking his mother with him. So the farm may have been abandoned by Armstrongs at this point in favour of the other farm.

All this farming in the blood n' i can't be bothered to even mow the lawn! :)

Julie, I'm intrigued by the Allendale connection. It's a fair walk to Houghton from Allendale. Did it actually mention Allendale on the headstone?

Hi Bob,
George was born in Haltwhistle in 1818 and looks like he or his parents rented a farm in Allendale called Holm Farm. George and his wife Hannah must have left there to work the farm in Stanwix. I have them at Holm in 1861 census and Cross Hill by 1871. They only had 2 sons that i've found George (b. 1853) and Edward (b. 1957). I know Edward left farming and married a traveling girl (much to both families disdain).

If you come down the 469 right to the bottom and turn right, just over the motorway, you might find some of great uncle Edwards rellies as well. There is a private camp run by the brother of Prince Phillip's carriage driving mate. Bit further on is the Near Boot that I mentioned earlier. The far boot has disappeared beyond Houghton church and basis of great discussion hereabouts.  Especially as Houghton has no pub!!

The brother who runs the camp wouldn't happen to have the Sir name Angus would it? And his brother being Job Angus from Morpeth? Just thinking about what someone in the family once said.
Interesting about Edward though as I never did find a death date or place for him. I have his wife Agnes in Coatbridge (just outside Glasgow) died there a widow in 1939. Her family almost disowned her because of the marriage.

Hi Rob

Just wondered if you managed to come to see the family home?  If so did you find everything easily?
