Armstrong marriage in Annan
« on: Saturday 22 May 10 11:27 BST (UK) »
HI all.
I've been trying to find a marriage cert for Edward Armstrong (b. 1857) and Agnes McKenzie (b. 1863) who apparently married in Annan in 1879 but without much success so far. There's nothing on Scotland's People web site (which has never failed me in the past).
Is there anywhere else i could be looking?
I might take a trip to Annan in a few weeks if anyone could tell me where i should look when i get there? :)

Thanks,
Rob

Hi Rob,

Ok been having a look and can’t find the marriage either. Can you give us any more detail? Did you got the year of marriage from a child’s birth certificate? Where were Edward and Agnes born? Where did they live after they were married?

Emma

Hi Emma,
Yes, i did get the year and location of marriage from 2 of their children's birth certs.
Edward was born in in Hexham in 1857 and Agnes ( part of a traveling family) was born in Glasgow in 1863. After they were married they moved over to Edinburgh, but since they were both now part of the traveling community they moved about a bit. Edwards occupation was now a Traveling tinsmith.

Thanks for looking into it for me :)

We thought they might be as they got married so young. I would guess it’s been an irregular marriage, possibly even at Gretna Green. Where to look next this is the question?

I would recommend looking at as many of the irregular marriages for the area as you can. I know some are on Ancestry but there are others. There is a list on the GRO site - here’s the link: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/family-records/irregular-border-and-scottish-runaway-marriages.pdf

Have you managed to trace back the Armstrong and McKenzie family or do you want the marriage certificate for the parent’s names? If you are you may be disappointed, these kinds of marriages are not famed for detailed information.

I will keep looking and let you know what I find.

Emma

Thanks Emma,
I do already have both parents names etc. Both families frowned upon the marriage because Edward was an English non-traveler and Agnes was seen to be of lower class.
I did think perhaps the marriage was mentioned on the birth certs to spare embarrassment. However, they are consistent with the year and place; and travelers are apparently very traditional and superstitious.

Thanks csc,
I know Edward's family were farmers in Hexham, and like I said to Emma the marriage was frowned upon because they came from differing backgrounds.
Yes, Agnes's father Isaac (b. 1833), was a tinsmith and also listed as a 'road laborer'.
