Most Presbyterian churches do not keep any sort of burial records except, if you are lucky, possible a graveyard map or list of trespass paid (fee charged to non-members for burial in old family plots- only covers non-members and not all churches followed this practice).

I sent off to Proni for the medical records for James Campbell, following the information kindly given by Cyclamen, paid my money and waited for a reply, finally the answer came that there where no illness or personal details on James Campbell. My question is, would these records have been destroyed, would they possibly be still held by Gransha, bearing in mind it was 1890 when he died, or is it possible that they are actually with Proni, as it seems fairly chaotic just now owing to the move. Another question, they sent a printout of the discharge and the cause of death was TB, as was a few of the other patients, any ideas why they would have been in the lunatic Asylum, or was this the only available hospital at that time.

Regards Daisy

I've just come across this thread.

I have a relative who was in the Londonderry Asylum - Robert (Bobby) Allen.

He was born in the early 1900's.

He went into the asylum in 1916 and died there in 1995.

I'm in New Zealand, so what would be the best way for me to find his patient records - if there are any?

Thanks in advance!

You haven't mentioned your relationship to Robert Allen but unless it's extremely close, and since it's such a recent date, it is unlikely you would be able to get any information from his medical records.

If you wish to try, suggest writing a letter to the hospital and ask what the procedure is regarding obtaining information. Be sure to mention your connection and stress you are looking for family medical information rather than just saying you are doing your family tree.

Thanks for your reply.

The medical reasons would be relevant for our family so I'll be sure to stress that.

He was my Great Uncle.

I'll try writing a letter.
Thanks so much!
