William Goold
« on: Wednesday 26 May 10 14:50 BST (UK) »
I am having difficulty finding William Goold and his family in the 1851 census.  William was born Abt 1850 in Calderbank, Calderlark near Coatbridge.  His mother was Margaret Goold born abt 1817 Douglas and I don't have a name for his father yet.

He had a sister Margaret born Abt 1836 and a sister Marion born abt 1860.

I have found a Margaret GOLDIE who seems to fit but would the name have changed so much?

I would be grateful for any help.

Have you tried other various spellings such as Gould, Gold etc., although all enumerators were literate, they were only writing down what they heard.   Years ago someone told me their name was "nola" this is what I wrote down in fact it was Knowler.   That is me writing what I heard phonetically.  When in a rush we often write down what we hear not the actual spelling, its much quicker.

It is very common for names to be spelt differently from census to census.   My Wiltshires even vary from father to son & brother to brother on same census returns.

I have to date found about 15 different variations of this name to date.
Fleming (Bristol) Fowler/Brain (Battersea/Bristol)    Simpson (Fulham/Clapham)  Harrison (W.London, Fulham, Clapham)  Earl & Butler  (Dublin,New Ross: Ireland)  Humphrey (All over mainly London) Hill (Reigate, Bletchingly, Redhill: Surrey)
Sell (Herts/Essex/W. London)

Margaret Anderson nee Goold (Wiliams sister) was listed on a marriage certificate I downloaded from Scotlandspeople.

Using census information and the help of someone on Ancestry I was able to trace the rest of the family.

So Margaret Anderson nee Goold and William Anderson were the mother and father of Mary Anderson born 1866 who married to Frank Raeside in 1900.

I think the Goldie family in the 1851 census are the ones I'm looking for as everything fits apart from the different spelling of the surname.

1883 Goold  Margaret  McMorran Kinning Park    Glasgow Lanarkshire

Margaret Goold ...widow of James Goold (Engine Fitter Journeyman) died aged 66 on 19/01/1883 .....parents are named as James (Coal Mining Grieve) and Margaret McMorran ms McMorran (both deceased) cert was signed by William Goold (son)

I also found a marriage for the couple

I have both McMorran and Gold families as distant ancestors from the Douglas Area......but haven't managed to link them to yours yet

Did you find the family on any of the census?  This Goold, Gold, Goldie thing is doing my head in LOL.

Best of it is, they are my wifes family not mine.

I think the Goldie one is the correct one for 1851 as James'  occupation would tie in with his occupation on Margaret's death cert
