Thank you for your messages and help.
What a shame that little John died the year he was born!
Ev,you asked which children were on the 1871 census with their parents, and cookies4 has added this information. I will try widening the age parameters on the deaths as cookie suggests and see what happens!I so want to find the death certificate for this father John so that I can follow the family back.
I am very grateful fo everything that you are doing to help me in this,Carolyn

I have widened the years of searching the death certificates on SP,but have only found men who died while we know my John was alive,or they died a few years after we know my John was already deceased.
One new man appeared recorded death 1884 on Rothesay but who was married to someone else,a Margaret Anderson,no occupation given, and there is no record I can find of my John remarrying after Jane's death with a Margaret Anderson.

The only one I have ever found in the many I have viewed(what an expense!)who was a blacksmith journeyman, died in 1873 but married to a different lady called Agnes Fleming and we know my John was alive at the registration of Angus' marriage in 1879.(Unless a mistake was made and the word deceased missed out on the marriage certificate). I've even checked to see if my John married an Agnes Fleming, but no.

So here I am,still stuck. Thanks to your advice and help a few more intersting pieces to the family puzzle have slotted into place. But how i should love to find this john's parents! Carolyn

Sorry Carolyn I don't think I explained myself very well.

It is John's year of birth that I widened. I searched for John McKechnie - year of birth 1826 +/- 5 years, between 1879 and 1886. You get 5 results and 2 of these are at Lanarkshire, both in 1880.

Regards,
Nel

Cookies4 - BINGO! Found him!
By doing what you suggested and widening the search of his birth years by 5 +/_ I found John Mckechnie, blacksmith journeyman, widower of 1st Jane Christie
                                      2nd Marion Mckecknie
(Didn't know he'd married again!Who on earth is she?)

Father Angus Mckechnie, blacksmith, mother Agnes Mckechnie m/s McLean - as far as some dodgy writing goes - it's a bit fancy for me to read!
He died Dec 20th 1880 of phthisis. There seems to have been a lot of that in my family!
Now to find out about the previous generation........Thank you to all who have shown an interest in my search, guided me in the right direction by narrowing down dates, findind children I didn't know existed, marriages for them, census details for them....I am so,so very grateful.Thank you,Carolyn

Great stuff!

I think my first port of call would be the marriage in 1873 of John and Marion to see what he says about his parents.

IGI  has an extracted entry for the marriage of John and Marion , 14 Oct 1873 Blythswood, Glasgow.

Perhaps I'm on the wrong track BUT could this Marion be the same person who married John Beaton- 17 Feb 1866 MILTON( John and Jane were in the same area around this time) also the last child I see born to the Beatons was Dec 1872 in Govan.
