1851 census
« on: Thursday 27 May 10 15:22 BST (UK) »
Hi
Wonder if anyone can help with the 1851 census

I am looking for a James Filburn born 1827 in Whitby.  In his marriage cert (1855) is is a seaman and then in the 1861 he is found as a mate aboard a ship called the Enterprise.

I can't find him in the 1851 census and wonder if he is at sea, if the boat is not in port did it not get registered?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Joanna  :)

If the boat he was on was not in port or  in British waters or he was not Royal Navy, he wouldn't have been recorded in 1851

Thanks Gadget - that was very interesting especially as I think James's father-in-law may have died at sea because I can't find him anywhere either!

I shall just have to assume that James was at sea in 51 and possibly 41 too.
