3x Great Grandfather's surname
« on: Friday 28 May 10 11:54 BST (UK) »
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this ,so if it isn't ,I aploogise now.I've just started looking at my maternal grandfather's side of the family at it seems his grandfather was a Daniel Cablashar born in Ireland in 1758.I can't seem to find that name anywhere ,Could it be mispelt on the 1851 census or is it a correct Irish surname.Thanks for your time in reading this

Do you have any other known names for people you think might be in the same household at the time?
If you try a search for somebody you know is in the same household it might give you another option for the "Cablasher" spelling.

Is the 1851 census the only reference you've found to Daniel Cablashar? Have you looked at the scanned image or a transcript? Have you found a death for him in England?

There's a marriage (June quarter 1844 Birmingham) between John Grice and Ellen Callaghan. If this is the correct couple looks like Calbasher Callaghan has been mis-read as Callaghan Calbasher.

Opps- names wrong way around.

Excuse me for jumping on the Ireland Board which is not my area of expertise but think I can help.

I think the name should be Calligan.

1841 Census there is an Ellen CALLIGAN, age 17, born Ireland living in Birmingham.
HO107/1148/4/Aston

The Sister in law, age 5, on 1851 Census born Birmingham, could be Eliza Calligan reg March 1846 Birmingham. ( couple of possibles)

Maybe Daniels accent was hard for the enumerator.

1861 Census
Lancaster St, 19 Court 2H,
Birmimgham, Warwickshire
RG9/2155/15/23

Daniel CALLAGHAN, 63, Head, Widower, Shoe maker, born Ireland
Morgan Callaghan, 41, Son, Unm, Shoe maker, born Ireland
ELIZA Callaghan, 15, Daug, Unm, born Birm, Warwickshire

1871 Census Danie CALAGHAN is in the Workhouse, described as a cordwainer ( shoemaker);
RG10/3133/75/28

Death Reg;
Daniel CALLIGAN, June 1871, Birmingham, 6d 146, Age 73
So born c 1798

Trish :)

Morgan is with his married Sister Eliza in 1871. Although down as a Lodger everything else matches.
And ANOTHER spelling of the Surname ::)

1871 Census
Stanforth St, 12 Court 1 House,
Birmingham, warwickshire
RG10/3118/64/18

Henery F FLETCHER, 29, Head, Mar, Occp?, born Birmingham
ELIZA Fletcher, 25 , Wife, Mar, born Birmingham, Warwickshire
Daniel Fletcher, 4, Son, born Birmingham
Charlotte Fletcher, 4mths, Daug, born Birmingham
MORGAN COLLAGHAM, 52, Lodger, Shoemaker, born Ireland

Marriage;
Henry FLETCHER, June 1866, Birmingham, 6d 229
On the same page is Eliza CALLIGHAN

Another spelling and I rest my case ;D
