Thank you so very much Trevor, David, Irene, Tony and Skippy!!

I am in awe of the talent you all bring to this board.  The restorations are wonderful.  I really appreciate your taking the time to work your magic on my photo.  What a terrific collection.

Any one care to venture a guess of the date of the photo??

Cheers,

Susan

A date...well, the lady is dressed in the style of about 1910 or so, but older ladies tended often to stick to more comfortable clothing that was more familiar to them, and fashions changed rather dramatically between about 1910 and the end of the war. The girl, though, is wearing a dropped-waist dress which came into fashion in 1922, for women at least, not too sure about children,  and lasted for about a decade....so my guess would be very early 1920s for the photo. This would make it very possible indeed for the lady to be your great grandmother. Even if the girl's dress is earlier the photo could still be of your great grandmother.

Well, that's my two cents :)

Thank you so much, Carolyn.  The photo is beautiful.

Everyone has done such a remarkable job.  I am going to London next week and will be meeting for the first time a distant cousin who shares this great grandmother with me.  I can hardly wait to show these lovely restorations to her.

Cheers,

Susan

Thank you, China.  I very much value your two cents!!

I'm convinced it is my great grandmother Mary.  I received this second photo recently from Mary's grandson and he believes it was taken around 1910.  Do you think this is the same woman?  Taken at about the same age?

Mary's youngest surviving daughter Agnes was born in late 1899.  Do you think the young girl in the first photo could be around 11 or 12 years old?  If so, the photo could be of Mary and Agnes and taken around 1911 or 1912, which fits in with the dress style of the older woman but not the child.  Hmmm!!

I'm leaning towards the photo being taken before the war.  Mary's husband was a marine fireman and was killed at sea during the war.  From family stories, I think she had a very hard life after his death and would probably not have had the money for photographs.

I'm rambling now....sorry!! Thanks so much for your help.

Hello Susan
As China says the lady's dress style was typical during the early decade up to around 1910.
The girl's dressed a bit more up to date, her waistline not quite the dropped waist of 1915 which is a couple of inches lower.
Her lace collar also popular up to WW1.A date of 1910 - 14 & her hemline suggests no older than 12.

Hi Jim

Thanks so much for your helpful information.  From what you and China have said, I think I can conclude that this photo is of my Great Grandmother Mary and her daughter Agnes.

Much appreciated.

Susan
