Assisted Immigration - Depositors
« on: Monday 31 May 10 01:43 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Would the depositor for an assisted immigrant have been living in Australia, or could they have been overseas?  ie.  I have an ancestor arriving on the Northbrook in 1878 and her depositor is Richard Dalton, which was her father's name, but I always assumed he was in Ireland - not in Sydney.

thanks :-)

Hi there,

I think that the deposit was normally made in Australia. What was your immigrant's name?  Have you checked the shipping record to see if she has any relatives listed as "living in the colony"?

Debra

Hi famhistbuff
Check the NSW Immigration Deposit Journals 1853-1900 – held by State Records of NSW.  I have found this index lists name of the sponsor, amount of deposit he/she paid, date paid, deposit number, and the names and ages of proposed immigrants.  Good luck

Sorry famhistbuff - forgot to add that in my searches the sponsors were always resident in Australia.  Money was deposited with the government offices by a person who wished to sponsor family members or the proposed immigrant could be someone they were proposing to employ.
