Germany: HELP - Bavarian Ancestors
« on: Monday 31 May 10 19:55 BST (UK) »
I wonder if there is anyone out there with some expertise in tracing Bavarian ancestors???  I have managed to trace some info through naturalistation records of my GG grandfather as follows:

His name was John Henry Brack born 1849 in Feil, Rheinland-Pfalz (is it possible this is a more English version of his name???).  These records show his parents as Theodor Brack and Anna Maria Frick.  The earlist English census I have found him in is the 1871.  John married in 1872 and his marriage certificate shows his father Theodor as a farmer.

It appears from maps that the Feil area is farming country.

I have also found another son of Theodor and Anna named Theodor born and died in 1839 in Feil.

I am wondering how i now go about finding more details on John's German family.  If anyone can offer any help I'd be more than grateful as, unfortunately, I am not able to go t Germany to look at archives.

Thanks

Brack (Germany/London)

Hallo Jovi,

On the 1901 Census it said he was a naturalised English man so I looked at the NA and found this:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=5072350

I've no idea what you would find on such a document but others on here would maybe help you.

Thank you.  I do actually already have his naturalisation records from which I did manage to get his DOB and names of his parents but that's about all the info it gives (not even a date when he arrived in England believe it or not).

One more thing:

Rheinland-Pfalz is a "Bundesland" in its own right and is not in Bavaria.

Rheinland-Pflaz- "Prior to German unification in 1871, parts of this area were called the Rheinpfalz and was owned by the kingdom of Bavaria."
See here: http://www.genealogy.net/reg/RHE-PFA/rhein-p.html

Added- found a weather forecast for Feil which is in the right area- could this be the place your ancestors came from?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I'm in Germany & I've just had a look at the phone book online....it lists all the people of a certain surname within 30 km of the place you're looking for....& there are 2 and a half pages of Bracks within 30 km of Feil ! It looks as though the records would be held in Bad Kreuznach....we've got a flat phone rate, so I'm happy to do any phoning in Germany for people here.....enough posters helping me with stuff in Britain. Have phoned  the archives & the person I need to talk to is away until tomorrow.
