The oldest surviving stone was laid in 1669, for one John Clarke. There don't seem to be any others from the 17th century and none that match the description of a Jane.

Looking at the Notts FH CD, there was a marraige in Basford in 1678 between Jane Cutlar and John Cothory  - any use?

Thanks, Annie.  Good to know.  I never reviewed all of the gravestones at St. Leo's.  The ones that I did look at were dated much later than I needed; I figured anything earlier was worn down if there were even a gravestone.  Besides, I knew that Gabriel Whelden was buried outside of Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A in 1654.  I went to that gravesite but knew ahead of time that there was no gravestone for him....and no evidence of where exactly he was buried.

Between the time that Gabriel sold his property in Old Basford until his name is mentioned soon after, his wife, Jane was not heard from again.

Bonjour Lynn

This is my very first venture into the world of forums

Living in France it is not easy to research in the UK. Would you be so kind and look in your book of the gravestones in St Leodagarius Church. The name is Dorothy Mason 1908-1929 nee Harrison

Bonjour Charentais et bienvenue!

Burials in St Leo's graveyard stopped quite some time before the date you give. I'm afraid that I can't see any headstone with the name you give in the Basford general cemetery either.

The reference to St. Leodegar interested me, as I was only aware of the dedication to him at Wyberton, Boston, Lincs, which I was told was unique in Britain . You live and learn, 4 though double what I had anticipated is still a very low number of dedications, many thanks for the information.
