Jessie Hill
« on: Tuesday 01 June 10 21:39 BST (UK) »
Sibling of George... i think.

Havent found her on a census but found her on Jane Nicol's death certificate as Daughter.
Parents Andrew Hill and Jane Nicol.
Jessie Hill born between 1859 and 1890.
Married someone Colquhoun. (Spelling may be off)

She appears on a search for a marriage between Jessie Hill and Colquhoun but i've already spent £40 today on scotlandspeople.

Have you tried the 1901 census to see if Jessie is there with her husband. Do you know roughly where she lived?

What was the date of death for Jane Hill ( Nicol)?

Scotland's People has a marriage of a Colquhoun to a Jessie Hill in 1893 but I have no credits at the moment so can't give any more details, sorry.

MOdified: Oops sorry, I just noticed that you have seen that entry on SP.

I can check the index for Scottish censuses if that is of any help. It won't give details but might help in finding Jessie's husband's name.

Alexander Colquhoun and Jessie Hill married 6th January 1893 at 21 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow.

Alexander was 20 and a railway engine stoker. He stayed at 136 Rose Street, South Glasgow, and his parents were Matthew Colquhoun, fisherman (dec.) and Mary Colquhoun m.s. Allan.

Jessie was 19. She also stayed at the above address and her parents were Andrew Hill, bookbinder (journeyman) and Jane Hill m.s. Nicol.

Witnesses were Archibald Neilson and Maggie Taylor.

Hi All

She looks to have died in 1958, birth year from age at death shows as c. 1875 which corresponds with her 1901 census entry after her marriage to Alexander Colquhoun.

Jessie's birth does not appear on the IGI alongside her siblings as she may have been registered in 1875. Alexander's does, however, and he was born 6th July 1872 in Girvan, Ayrshire. His parents are as on the marriage certificate.

This looks like Alexander and Jessie in 1901:

Address: 30 Pollock Buildings, Paisley, Renfrewshire
Alexander Colquhoun, m, head, 28, railway engine driver, b. Gervan [sic], Ayrshire
Jessie Colquhoun, f, wife, 26, -, b. Glasgow
Alexander Colquhoun, m, son, 5, scholar, b. Glasgow
Andrew Colquhoun, m, son, 3, scholar, b. -?hill, Renfrewshire
And 3 boarders.

There's a death for a Jessie Colquhoun/Hill in 1957 Pollok, aged 82 years.

hume :)

Sorry Monica, was posting as you were. ;)

Thank you all for your marvelous work. 1875? Hmm i have her sister Jane Hill as being born then so either they were twins or i've got Jane's date wrong.
I've only found his siblings yesterday so its still rather new to me. (George Hall hill was my great grandad's step father) (my great grandad has no father recorded.)

Yay im so excited, finding new relatives always excites me. :)

So, this would be Jessie at home with family for the 1881 census - on the street that Hume found on the marriage entry:

Andrew Hill 38, Bookbinder (Out Of Employment), b. Ireland
Jane Hill 39
George Hill 14
Louisa Hill 12
Georgina Hill 10
Margraet Hill 8
Jessie Hill 6

Address: 75 Rose St, Glasgow Hutchesontown

Pollock buildings eh? I have that on another certificate somewhere... cant think where now, ive been looking at too many certificates! Plus most of my relatives have pollock as thier middle name, they may have been connected to the houses.

The three boarders, who were they? I'm missing George's children on the 1901 census and was wondering if they went to live with one of his siblings?
