how do i find out an exact adress?

hi everyone

i now know that i had ancestors on church road, alloa

what i want to know is how i find out what house it was they stayed in ?

on the census it just gives the street/road name, but no number?

is there any way in wich i can can find out what house they stayed in?

the reason i am asking, is that in the hope that the house is still standing, then i can visit where my ancestors used to walk.....

It's possible that there were no numbers given to the houses at that time.  Likewise, it's also possible that renumbering went on later so it looks as if they may have moved, but didn't .

Local directories may be your best bet but I don't know of any from Alloa that are online.  Clackmannanshire library service has them.  An e-mail to them may help you answer your query

Hi Paul,

Which census year are your ancestors living in Church Street, Alloa?

The houses on Church Street have been standing there for a good number of years without demolition or much change. It's very possible that the house they lived in still exists in much the same form today.

But doesn't show a house number!

Hi again Paul,

It's likely the house your ancestors lived in back in 1881 will still be standing today. Most, if not all, of the houses on that stretch on both sides of the road still exist today.

A pity there's no house number on the 1881 census. I pass that stretch of road on a number of occasions every week and could have had a look to see if it's still there.

Its just such a shame I don't have a house number, because I would love to visit the house that my ancestors lived in!

Hi Paul,

I spoke to someone today who informed me that the houses in Church Street, Alloa have been under a preservation order for a long number of years. They said that the house your ancestors lived in would appear pretty much in the same form today as it was back in 1881!

If you don't want to wait that long have a 'walk' along the street on Google Strretview- it's quite clear so you'll be able to see all the houses on the street.
