Comparing it to the 1851,  as where you will have already seen, Miles is living with
his father and presumably his step mother :

1851 census:
HO107/2321, folio 163, page 44

Yorkshire, Leeds
83 Wellington Street

John Pickersgill, h, mar, 40, Saddler Master Employs 2 men, b. Yorkshire, Bellerby
Eliza, wife, 35, b. Lincolnshire, Claypole
Miles, son, unm, 18, Sadler, b.Yorkshire, Leeds
Joseph Cheatter, S in L, unm, 13, Scholar, b. Yorkshire, Leeds
William Cheatter, S in Law, 9, Scholar, b. Yorkshire, Leeds

And finally, you'll be pleased to know !  :D

This looks like the above mentioned Jane, staying with her grandmother in Bellerby :

1861 census:
RG9/3669, folio 8, page 9

Yorkshire, Bellerby

Jane Pickersgill, h. widow, 71, Grocer, b. Yorks, Fremington
Jane, Gr.Dau, unm, 24, b. Yorks, Leeds

If it is all a huge coincidence and John's parents aren't Thomas and Jane Pickersgill, I'd be more than a little surprised. See what you think anyway.

Kindest regards,

Pels. :)

Thanks to genjen, Pels. and sillgen for your interest and information.   You are all quite correct with the information given.   In the time between starting this question, I actually sent to the GRO for John and Eliza's marriage certificate which confirmed his father as Thomas.   The cert. did not show any age for John, just "full age" but I am sure you are right when you say 1809 with the baptism at Spennithorne.  I also found young Miles at his grandparents on the night of the 1841 and have since traced him and his descendents through to 1911.   Again, many thanks for all the help.   Jazgran.

As I was at Northallerton this morning and had the Spennithorne film out I had a look for John in the hope there would be a bit extra info in the Register but sadly not. The full entry reads 24 September 1809 John son of Thomas and Jane Pickersgill, Bellerby.

Many thanks Angelfish58.  This confirms the year of birth, and even gives me his actual birthday!  I do appreciate your looking for this whilst at Northallerton.   Thanks again to all at Rootschat and best wishes from Jazgran.

You're welcome  :) It's actually his baptism rather than his birthdate. I was just going through my notes and I'd noted the burial of a Jane Pickersgill in Spennithorne 12 Mar 1864 aged 76 might she be Johns mother?

Thanks again, Angelfish58.   Yes, it looks as if that could be John's mother, dates would fit.  Thanks for that additional information.  Best wishes, Jazgran.

I wonder if anyone could help with our puzzle. I am researching my partner's 4 x great grandparents. Joseph Thompson m Jane Plews 1827 at Spennithorne, the 51 & 61 census both say that she was born in Bellerby 1811 which would have made her around 16 when married. I understand ages were sometimes altered a little in the censuses, but i can not find Jane Plews born there around that time??
The 1841 census suggests she was born 1816! There is something about this family that doesn't add up especially when looking at ages of children.
If anyone has any information would be great to hear from you.
