Slieveenagh in Killeentierna
« on: Thursday 03 June 10 20:24 BST (UK) »
I have come across some Killeentierna R.C. church records which indicate people were from Slieveenagh.

I think this was a local name for Springmount.  Can anyone confirm this?
CAMPBELL (Balleghan), DOUGLAS(S) (Carrowhugh) - Lower Moville, Co. Donegal
HUSBAND(S) (Sneem), SULLIVAN (Kenmare) - Kenmare, Co. Kerry
KEARNEY (Kilmurry/Castleisland), O'CONNOR (Shanaknock/Ballymacelligott) - Tralee, Co. Kerry
KEEFFE (Ballyhooly), HARRINGTON (Rathnadarrahy), DILLON - Castletownroche, Co. Cork
Note: My Irish ancestors ended up in Boston, Massachusetts area of U.S. between 1880 & 1905.

I'm not sure if this is of any help . In Jeremiah King's book -County Kerry Past and Present -he gives the Irish for Springmount as Cnocearagh. I suppose if you substituted Slieve =mountain for Cnoc= hill you would get something vaguely like Slieveenagh but it is very tenuous.
You can search Kings book on line at www.askabout ireland.ie
under the Kerry section. None of the King's other entries beginning with Slieve have any resemblance to Slieveenagh. The Irish placenames commission at www.logainm.ie has no Irish entry for Springmount but if you log in to the site you can send a query and they are very good at replying.

Thank you.  The place just seems to be archaic to define.

I had come across one reference on the internet for Slieveenagh at http://www.sip.ie/sip064/Currow.html

It lists "Townlands of Killeentierna."  Under the letter S it has:

Sandville: Shanavullen: The old mill Slieveenagh: Springmount: Cnocearagh

I believe that should be actually divided into 2 entries:

     Sandville: Shanavullen: The old mill
     Slieveenagh: Springmount: Cnocearagh

I'm not sure what the source of that information is though.

I did confirm that Shanavullen meant "old mill."  I was having trouble trying to translate Slieveenagh (using Gaelic dictionaries on-line) into something like Springmount.  I think I was coming up with something like "mount heath."

There is a Slievenagh in County Antrim, but that seems just too far away.  Also, I couldn't find it translated from Gaelic anywhere on the net.

Had a look at that site where you found slieveenagh. I notice that it was a school project assisted by the Heritage Officer. You could write to her to see if she has any information.
I would also try the Placenames Commission

Thank you.  I now at least have a general area where this part of my tree came from.

Hi Amy,

Sorry, but I can't help with information on Slieveenagh, even though I also have McCarthy ancestors from near that area of Killeentierna. However, I was interested to see you have a Kearney, Kilmurry connection. My mother was Kearney from Kilmurry and I have done some research on that branch of my family tree. I might be able to fill some gaps for you and would be very interested in any information you might have on those that emigrated.

Kind regards,
Joan

Have recently got a marriage cert from 1943 where the residence of the groom is recorded as Sleeveenagh Farranfore so the name was in use until quite recently.I still haven't identified the exact location but the place where their first child born in 1944 was Lisheenbawn which is between Farranfore and Castleisland but I don't know if the family had moved by 1944.
