Grange (Greencastle DED) 1901 ... lost?
« on: Friday 04 June 10 12:30 BST (UK) »
could the townland of Grange have been passed over?

I tried the following in Google (similar to a suggestion on the Dublin board) with no luck.
Grange site:http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/

About 10 years ago I wrote down brief details for Agnes Kavanagh, a teacher, living in Grange, Greencastle DED, with a Carvill family.
With the online 1901, I thought I'd check her out in detail ... no luck!

I can't find Grange as a townland under Greencastle??? did I make a mistake all those years ago. (of course, I never wrote down the names of the Carvills!!)

I've found the Carvills in Grange in 1911 - no results for Patrick or Sarah in Grange in 1901 - if I hadn't got my 8/10 year old scribble in front of me, I'd say I was losing it! (no comments. please!)

Dont think your ready for the funny farm ...yet

From Ros Davies website...Grange:
a townland of 175 acres; 4km SW of Kilkeel near Cranfield; click here to see its position on a map; means ' the granary', usually connected to an ancient church; part of the Bagenal Estate in 1552; in 1659 there were 12 Irish families living here & the owner was Richard Houston Esq.; owned by Lord Nicholas Bagenal in 1690s ; 2 schools in area

Cant say why its not listed, but dont hold your breath waiting on NA to investigate. I contact them when 1911 census came on line that there were no listings for Copperfield Street in Belfast - still waiting, yet the street directories of the time had loads of occupants.

There's a thread on here somewhere which mentions that there are towlands missing from the online 1901 census. Apparently some townlands were not microfilmed when that project was done (although the paper copies still survive) and the National Libary is supposed to eventually transcribe then add them to the online site.

Here's the explanation from the website-

"A number of townlands/streets do not appear in the online census for 1091 and 1911, mostly due to their never having been microfilmed, and thus never digitised. This is being remedied, and the missing material will be placed online as soon as possible. A list of the missing material will shortly appear on this page.
The records for some streets and townlands have never been in the custody of the National Archives, and these will be clealy indicated."

Grange does still exist. There is a church and a primary school there.

Nish6 you are replying to a 14 year old question but eadaoin should see as regularly posts.
Some of the Townlands missing from the 1901 census are now accessible by browsing the film images online on Familysearch as some were photographed but skipped on NAI. Others escaped filming.

This is the thread https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=601757.0
There are certainly Townlands missing 1901 compared to 1911 (18 vs 21).
