Which subscription?
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 14:51 BST (UK) »
I've had a bit of a break from family history and both my subscriptions -to Ancestry and find mypast - have elapsed.
I'm now looking to start again but in view of all the changes that have taken place I wondered which is the best to rejoin -I'm surprised how much the fees are now -hence I only plan to enrol for 1 site.

Your views would be much appreciated.
thank you
Sandra

Hi,

I think that only you will know which would be the best for you by  trying them both out yourself.
Personally, I really don't think much of findmypast, I much prefer Ancestry .

Why not take advantage of the  free trials on both sites first to see which one suits your needs/research  before deciding which one to take a sub out with with? After all that's what free trials are for:  try before you  decide if you want to buy.

As  long as  you use a different  card   and email address to what you have used in the past with them when you had subs  I don't think  there  will  be much of  a problem .

Kind regards:)

Hi Sandra

You can save yourself an Ancestry subscription by using Library Edition at a local library, Staffordshire has access

Findmypast does have some good record such as many army records, parish records and the censuses can be searched by occupation or address.

I find Find My Past a bit of a waste of money.
I changed from Ancestry about 6 months ago because I came to a bit of a standstill. I have found their Census records quite good , although I find the Ancestry ones easier to use and  I do not like the way the BMD records make you search through years of records if you only have an approximate birth year. Unless Ancestry have changed their way of searching it was possible to get a list of names with a variety of years.
I have had an awful lot of information from Free BMD for 1837 onwards and Parish records for earlier dates from Freereg.

I personally just use FindMyPast, but that's largely because I took out a subscription to view the 1911 census and don't really see the point paying for another subscription to Ancestry...especially when I work in a library, and we provide free access to Ancestry there.  If there's anything I need to view on there, I've got my lunch-hour to do so.
Really I don't see an awful lot of difference between the two, to be perfectly honest.

The Genealogist has a good census search by address but in my opinion it is not as good as Ancestry or FindMyPast.
