Croix De Guerre
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 19:12 BST (UK) »
I came across the grave of a Jacob Metcalf in a churchyard at Builth Wells, Powys. He was a Sergeant with the KSLI (7312). He died in 1974 aged 54. Can't find any details about him awarded the Croix de Guerre  in 14-18.
Can anyone help please?

Thank you very much indeed for this information Phil - it helps when you see some official 'verification'. The entry you referred me to has hopefully also answered another puzzle the  - 'S' in the KSLI - I presume it means King's Shropshire Light Infantry.
Hope to find out what he did to be awarded the honour.
Many thanks again

Ken,

Correct; KSLI = King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

I'm afraid I don't know where C de G citations can be found.

I may be wrong but I think that most Croix de Guerres were awarded on the basis of a number per Division, which would then be rationed out to battalions - part of the solidarity between nations!

Hi Ainslie,
Thanks for that interesting piece of information. I have seen names listed with acts of valour performed, but not Jacob's. I wonder how they decided who would be given a Croix De Guerre, if what you say is correct?
