Elizabeth HARMAN's father, which one?
« on: Saturday 05 June 10 19:25 BST (UK) »
Hi folks,

I have Elizabeth HARMAN b 1830 Surrey d. 1902 Gravesend.
She married William TURNER, b 1825 at Reigate, Surrey 9/12/1849.
I had Elizabeth's parents as Henry HARMAN and Sarah BROOKER.
This was in some work that was done by somebody else but all seems verified.

I ordered a marriage cert from GRO (1849 qtr=D Vol=0IV Page=481)

On the cert all items match until Elizabeth's father's names - James HARMAN. ?

I've had a look at the 1841 and 1851 census, and some parish records for that period, but cannot seem to prove or disprove who is who.

It may be that I have the right cert, but can't see where the other data went wrong or of course vice versa. All help welcome.

Thanks

John

Hi

On 1861/1871 Census Elizabeth's birthplace is given as Horley - but in 1851 it is given as Leigh, Surrey.   Also, the census indicates birthdate as ca.1827 not 1830 and IGI has the following:

Elizabeth Harman bp.10/9/1826 Leigh, Surrey dau. of James and Martha.

In 1841 Census - at Charlwood, Surrey - James and Martha plus 4 children are transcribed as Harmon - ref. HO107 - piece 1076 - Book 3 - Folio 30 - Page 7.   Elizabeth not with them (probably working as a servant somewhere).   Can't find baptisms for the eldest 2 children (Caroline 12 and Dinah 10) with them but IGI shows the 2 youngest were baptised at Horley - Emma 22/5/1836 and Edward 19/2/1832.

James Harman and Martha Jordan married 6/5/1826 Leigh, Surrey

Not if they didn't check the parish register including the burial register (not found on the IGI) and the actual marriage certificate as you have done. Relying on online resources alone may not be enough.

Burial St Bartholomew Horley

Thanks Annette and Valda.

So it looks like I have quite a task on my hands now using James HARMAN as the father as per the mar cert. I will have to research from there back myself and see what I can put together for families and individuals. The trouble is that she had the data back to the 1600's which I will have to go through and verify.

Oh Well  :(
