Mack,

What can I say?  Spot on with the mind reading.

As for his brothers, I know very little of them, in fact it was only that a relative found the photo of the 'Knuts' that I got a lead with William, but here's their names, nice common Welsh ones!

THOMAS LEWIS, I know nothing of his military career.
DAVID MORGAN LEWIS, all I know is he was in Gallippali and shortly after returning home after the war, he was admitted to a sanitorium where he stayed until his death.
GOMER LEWIS, again I know nothing of him.
And the youngest, my late father-in-law ELFRYN LEWIS.  I do know he joined South Wales Borderers in 1917 and stayed with them until approx. 1928 and that he served in India.

That's it, so I doubt if I will ever find their records - unless of course a relative decides to clear out their loft and finds me another photo, but I won't hold my breath.

I really can't thank you enough for all your help.

Regards
Sandie

Mack,

Thank you for looking.  To be honest, with nothing more than a list of very common names & d.o.b.s I really don't expect to find them.

You have been more than helpful with William.

Thanks again

Hi Sandie!

You've more than likely got this - but just to show Mack - looks like this is his spelling!!- he was able to read and write - so I bet whenever he gave his name -  he would spell it out.... ( not for this of course!!)

Mack & Annie

Thank you both for your help.  Yes Annie I do have that.

Mack, what can I say.  I started with the vague hope of finding information about one brother, it now looks as if you have found a further two for me, brilliant!
I too thought Elfryn would be the easiest because of his unusual name.  He did in fact join up in 1917, even though this would only have made him 14.  We believe he went to India in 1919 but where her was for the two previous we have no idea, as you say he may have been the 'lucky' brother and managed to stay here for those two years.

I think we 'may' have found out last night why he is so hard to find.  My husband spoke to his elder brother who mentioned that their father was known by a lot of people as WILL LEWIS - would explain why the SWB can't find him as Elfryn, perhaps he used the name Will because he was so young.  The annoying thing this is no one has ever told us this before - my husband was only eight years old when his father died so has depended on his elder brothers to fill him in on such things.

Again, thanks a million for all the help.
