John Murton/Morton of Bedlington?
« on: Sunday 06 June 10 17:56 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find information on a John Murton/Morton born around 1791 in the Bedlington area.

He went on to live in Newcastle and was recorded in Robson Court in 1840 census as a Tailor.

Any earlier information would be much appreciated.

Thank you

 Nataz,

The village and parish of Bedlington and the wider area called Bedlingtonshire, although geographically within the borders of the County Of Northumberland, were part of the County of Durham, from before 1791 to 1844.

Ditto for Norhamshire and Islandshire, the three "enclaves" known collectively as "North Durham."

Hi

The IGI shows the following Murton's for Bedlington, Northumberland:

John Murton bp.27/4/1794   son John and Isabel
Andrew Murton bp.27/4/1794         ditto
Elizabeth Murton bp.10/5/1795 d. of John and Isabella

Whether John and Andrew were twins or both just baptised at the same time I can't say.

That's amazing thank you!

Have you managed to go any further back? Am discovering the 1700s are a stopping block when it comes to family history

And thanks as well for the other post. It's an impressive collection you have. Such a great resource

Thanks!

I’ve been working on my own family history for over 30 years and because I also came up against the 1700s blockage I started collecting parish register entries, census returns, wills, newspaper reports, and all kinds of other records including parish and estate accounts, records of payments to paupers, legal cases, crew lists, etc. I have more than 10,000 items. I also do transcription work for FreeReg (which is a fantastic resource) and in doing this I have made several discoveries of parish register entries which are not in Family Search, Ancestry or Find my Past. I actually discovered the name of the farmer who employed my five times great grandfather William Morton on the farm of Heckley High House near Alnwick in the 1770s by transcribing his burial entry in the Alnwick register.

Having finished my family history I’m now engaged in a project to trace the family trees of all the Mortons/Murtons of Northumberland and Tyneside and first I had to identify who was in the immediate family of each one. That’s how I was able to give you the information you wanted so quickly as I have a series of spreadsheets with each person assigned a family code. I’ve identified the immediate families of more than 90% of them and once complete I can link those families together. I’ve already started doing this but John and Isabel haven’t been covered yet. I’ll make them next on my list!
