The name Brett was very often written as Britt. It may be worth checking for a marriage certificate for William under this name.
Also, what were William and Ethel's eldest son and daughter called?
There were Bretts living in the Kilmanagh area in the north west of Kilkenny. Directly across the county border (in Co. Tipperary) from Kilmanagh is Ballingarry, where there were coal mines. Plenty of people from Kilmanagh would have worked in the mines.

Not sure if this helps but I am aware of Bretts in Durrow Co. Laois, let me know if you wish to pursue this line of enquiry

okay Judy, keep in touch.

Mrs Brett in Durrow was a widow and very well spoken she kept a lovely house and had one beautiful daughter called (*) whom I know.  She has more of an English demeanour and looks rather than Irish and I guess Bretts would not be of Irish extraction.  I will try and get a picture and send it to you so you may be able to spot a likeness.  I will ask her anyway when I see her of her ancestry and if it links with yours I will let you know.

Good Luck with the search.

Margaret
