I find a lot of London parish registers gave dates of births from 1700 onwards. As it was a city a lot of them gave street address and fathers occupation way before the standardisation of PRs in 1813. Although when I once checked the PRs for Iken in Suffolk post 1813 registers were still written by the vicars own hand and no printed format. The village is quite remote so the vicar was probably slow on the uptake.  ;D

But can we assume that the address given in the PR is the place of birth?  Usually it will have been, but perhaps not always?

That depends on how long after the child was born they were baptised. If after 1837 then you should be able to obtain the birth cert but of course not all births before 1875 went registered.

My 3xgreat grandfather was born in September 1828 in Soho, London. He was baptised in March 1830 and the address was Husband Street, Soho but whether William was born there is another thing. In 1821 the family were in Carnaby Street.

Dates, yes, Guy.  You will have seen many more parish registers and other documents than I.

But I was thinking, for instance, it was quite common for a woman to have her first child at the home of her mother or another female relative - which might not be in the same parish as the baptism and family home.
Sorry, misread your reply.
I took where to be when.
Cheers

Even now I know one or two people who come from London who are not sure exactly where in London they were born. They know roughly but as there are so many hospitals there one friend said they were born in the Kensington area.

The local maternity hospital has closed down where my daughters live, so all my grandchildren will be registered in that city, but live some distance away.

shame

It is all detective work, and now that I have found Charles in the 1851 and am 99% certain that its him... I thought it would close that bit..but of course not.   Now I want to know why he was in Hinckley etc etc etc -- I think it means that he was kept within his Mothers family - which is good... As previously, I felt he had been 'dumped' on the Clements.  but I am almost positive now that they were relations of his mother, just got to sort two different Elizabeth Greens one with the Burfords, and one with the Burgess/Clements....

still crazy..

I am sure you are right on that Xinia. I think he was kept with his mothers family.
