Hi Janis,

Thanks very much for taking the time to check. Margaret is not of the same family.

There are member submissions to the IGI for the family of William Hodgson and Ann Embleton who were married in St Hilda's, South Shields on 6th Sept 1815 (confirmed) but there are many blatant errors which took a long time to rectify. The problem we are trying to unravel is where their son Robert went before the 1861 census and what happened to him and his family up to his marriage in New Zealand in 1879.

When I had a subscription to Ancestry I couldn't find Sarah or children in 1861 but I probably used birthplaces to narrow the options and they were only shown as Durham so didn't get a hit.

Ambly seems to have found their son William so now I've got to try and find Sarah and possibly another 2 sons.

Regards,
Colin

Well you know Benjamin died in 1852.

You haven't found him on a ship's manifest going to Australia?  I found mine when he left in the 1856.

The Benjamin who died 1852 was the brother of Robert?
The 'missing' one is the 7 year old BENJAMIN  in 1861 Wingate Durham  with mother Sarah and brother William - believed to be the family of Robert HODGSON who ended up in NZ.

There were two Benjamin Embleton HODGSON - of similar age.
one son of Robert & Sarah (bap 24 Jan 1854 Castle Eden Durham), and the other son of Edward & Hannah (bap 7 Dec 1853 Monk Hesledon Durham)

The respective fathers Robert and Edward being brothers, sons of William HODGSON & Ann EMBLETON?

The son of Edward & Hannah
His birth was indexed (freeBMD) and Baptism recorded with no middle name.
But he married in 1878 as Benjamin Embleton HOSGSON to a Julia RYANS  and the Search Labs record of this  states his father as Edvardi (sic) HODGSON.  Benjamin & Julia are in the 1881 Census, their first child is named Edward. They immigrated to the US in 1884 and appear there in the subsequent Census - easy to find - they ended up in Pennsylvania.

I think - that Benjamin son of Robert and Sarah also immigrated to the USA, though the evidence is not so cut and dried as for his cousin.......

MARRIAGE - 1873 USA:
Of Benjamin H.  HODGEN (or HOLGSON) age 21 and Isabella CAMPBELL age 18
Married 25 Dec 1873, Jefferson County , Ohio

Benjamin & Isabella must have returned to the UK - because in 1877, they are recorded re-entering the US, along with a daughter born in England:

1877: Passenger List for "Germanic" arrived NY 25 Jun 1877
Benj'n HODGSON 23, Collier

On the IGI is a set of submitted records:

Son: Wilbert H HODGSON 8, b Ohio, parents born Pennsylvania

The son of Benjamin H. HODGSON Jnr & (Ivy) Estella CAMPBELL:
Ohio Christenings (Search Labs) :

Welbert Epplewright HODGSON, born 13 Dec 1901, son of Benj. H HODGSON and Stella CAMPBELL
Born: E. Liverpool, Columbiana, Ohio

And - there is a tree on A****ncestry, who name him as: Wilburt Eppilewhite HODGSON
The tree names his father but misnames his mother - and doesn't have any names back beyond his father.

There's more US Census & BDM to be found for them all  -  have just shown enought here to illustrate the growing theory....

Because  I'm thinking..... ???
EMBLETON >> HAMILTON
HEPPLEWHITE >>  EPPLEWRIGHT / EPPILEWHITE

Haven't seen the original to know if it's actually written as transcribed on Search Labs - but - this could be an indication of how "Embleton" became "Hamilton" in the US:

This is the baptism of the son of Benjamin Embleton HODGSON and Julia RYANS (Benjamin being the son of Ernest & Hannah)

Baptised 10 Aug 1885 Washington Tp, Columbiana County, Ohio - Benjamin Emilton HODGSON, parents B E HODGSON & Julia RYANS

(This family while ultimately settled in Pennsylvania, did spend time in Ohio - in the same county as Benjamin "Hamilton" HODGSON & Isabella CAMPBELL were also in for a while).

Cheers

I've just got back from a busy day and had a quick scan of your replies, so please don't be offended by a quick reponse.

I am absolutely amazed :D :D :D

I think I've got another busy day tomorrow trying to sort out all the details, but I'm perplexed as to how you picked up on the right families with such scant information ???

I must be slowing down  ;D

Many thanks,
Colin

This has developed way beyond my initial enquiry and I must admit that I can't find fault with any of it. It all fits together like a jig-saw puzzle.  ;D

Thank you all so very much, and I hope you won't mind me giving a special thanks to Ambly for all the details that she came up with (and so quickly). Absolutely unbelievable  :o

I am trying to help Maryanne in NZ to piece together the movements of her grandad Robert born c1828 Lumley and who married in NZ in 1879 as a bachelor. (his brother Edward born 1825 is my gg-grandad).

Ralph Hepplewhite Hodgson age 1 and a half years, died on 25th Feb 1858 at Wingate, son of Robert Hodgson, Coal Miner, and was registered by mother Sarah Hodgson.

It seems reasonable to assume that Robert left England between 1857 and 1861, but where did he go? Maryanne has a possible Immigration to Australia on the Red Jacket from Liverpool to Victoria, arriving 12th Aug 1861, for Robert & Sarah Hodgson, but I haven't been able to confirm this, and in view of the 1861 census entry for Sarah it seems very unlikely to be right.

What would be the chances of Robert going to America and ending up in new Zealand?
Stumped,
Colin
