Shimmell/Shimwell - Whittington/Newbold
« on: Monday 14 June 10 15:53 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any idea where John Shimmell/Shimwell was from? He was born c1783 but on the 1841 & 1851 censuses he says that he was born out of county. He lived in the Chesterfield area and had connections to Staveley & Newbold. He married Ann Glossop in 1803 Chesterfield, had nine children and died in 1870 at his daughter's pub in Newbold.

Yorkshire or Staffordshire look like possibilities - have you followed these up?

If he only died in 1870 - what is his birthplace on the 1861 census

So, he's in Stavely lodging with his daughter Ann (Richardson) in 1851.

So is this him in 1861 Staveley? Lodging with the Wagstaffs ?

RG9; Piece: 2536; Folio: 113; Page: 9

John 'Shirmels' 84 Ag Lab born Lancs, Tinsley

Age is shown 84, but I cant see an individual with these statistics back in 1851.

Once stayed at a holiday cottage belonging to farmers by the name of Shimwell in Youlgreave, Derbys.  We were across from the parish church and the churchyard had many Shimwell headstones.

Just a thought  ;)

Pat ...
Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

I've followed up both the Youlgreave and Brampton Shimwells and don't think there's any connection.
I can't find him on the 1861 census, I've never been able to find the John who lives with the Wagstaffs, I'll have to check that out. The Staffordshire connection looks good, especially as some of his sons/grandsons move down there to live.

Thanks  for your help everyone!
