Jane Eltingham/Thomas Scott - looking for info, please help!
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 05:30 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone:  My great great great grandparents were from Northumberland and I have good reason to believe from the Newcastle area.  They emigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia in 1855-57 along with their five children.  I've searched via ancestry.com for birth, marriage and census information without any luck.  Here are their names/yob:  Thomas Scott b. 1813, wife Jane Eltingham b. 1819; children: Jane Scott b. 1838; William Scott b. 1842; Thomas Scott b. 1849; Robert Scott b. 1853; Isabell(a) b. 1855.  The yob's could be + or - a year.  I don't have a marriage date for them but I'm guesstimating 1836 - 1838.  Thomas Sr. and their sons were all coal miners in Cape Breton which was most likely his employment in England.   I would very greatly appreciate any looks ups that anyone would be able to do - birth information/parents of Thomas or Jane, a marriage record, census info, suggestions on how to access records or information on the surnames Scott and Eltingham in the Newcastle area.  Thanks so very much.

I cannot find a marriage in my index for Northumberland or Co. Durham which goes to 1837 or in my border marriages book for a Eltingham/Scott.  Nor Eltringham or any looking similar.  Nothing comes up in the BMD

Scott is such a common last name.  Do you have them in the 1851 census?

Hi Janis:  I haven't been able to locate them in the 1851 census, no.  I've also tried searching for birth records of the children - I've found matching names with parents Thomas/Jane with close birth dates but they are each in a different location and, of course, they don't provide the mother's maiden name.  I'm leaning towards thinking there was a spelling error in the record I've located containing Jane's surname as "Eltingham" - from what I've been reading it's more likely to be Eltringham.  I appreciate your help - it's like looking for a needle in a haystack!

The 1851 census enumerator did not provide with great clues mainly because of poor writing and poor georgraphy !

For " Where Born".........

Thomas senior and Margaret.... could that be Fawdon ?  Fawdon was one of the townships that comprised the Parish Of Gosforth.

Jane senior... Greenside... but in County Durham not Northumberland
Jane jnr ....  is that "Crawcrook", if so, again not Northumberland, but in County Durham.

Greenside and Crawcrook are very close together, and both were within the County Durham parish of Ryton.  Perhaps the enumerator can be forgiven here as Ryton Parish neighboured the Northumberland Parish of Ovingham.

Benton Square and Benton were communities within the Parish of Longbenton.

Cramlington Parish was a northern neighbour of Longbention Parish.

If Margaret, born circa 1835 is the couple's first child, and she was born in Fawdon, then perhaps marriage was in Gosforth area ?

Yes Michael - now you've suggested it, I'm definitely going with Fawdon  :D

IF we're looking at the right family, then considering the age gap between children William and Ann, I wondered if Jane was a second wife, maybe.

FreeBMD finds this marriage:
Sep 1844 Newcastle T 25 289
Jane Eltringham to *possibly* Thomas Scott

Not so sure the registration district is right though.

Back in 1841, I can't find a better match for the family than this - bit doubtful as the 3 year old daughter is called Ester instead of Jane :-\)

1841
HO107/822/2 12 17
Long Benton, Northumberland
Benton Grange

Thos Scott, 25, C Miner
Elizabeth, 25
Margaret, 6
Esther, 3
William, 10 months

All born in county

 Perhaps......

Thomas/Elizabeth c1841 living in Benton Grange (Longbenton Parish- Tynemouth Registration District) with three children.

Possible Death Registration for Elizabeth,  March Qtr, 1843, Tynemouth Reg Dist.
(Her dying in Longbenton area or Cramlington- both within Tynemouth Reg District)

Then Thomas marries Jane Elt...... in Newcastle city in Sept Qtr 1844, rather than in his own back yard ( St John's Newcastle only about 4 miles from Longbenton, only 7 from Cramlington)

Jane brings Crawcrook-born dtr, Jane, to the marriage.

Perhaps the first child of the marriage is Ann.... her birth is registered as Ann Eltingham Scott, Dec Qtr 1846, Tynemouth Reg District.

Then they have a Thomas, "Ester" and Sarah by time of 1851 census.

In Cramlington Parish "Durham Bishops Transcripts" @ Image No 224 there is baptism of an Ann to Thomas & Jane Scott on 27 July 1845. Date not a good fit ?

(At Image No 230 there is another Scott bapt. to a couple John and Esther ? )
