I have to tell you that you folks are simply amazing!

Tati: Thank you!  The 1851 census that you mentioned - I do believe this could be the right family - the ages and dates fit.  I have no record of an child Margaret or Ann on this side of the water but it could be that Margaret was already married by the time the family emigrated and either stayed in England or I can't locate her because records here are in her married name; Ann may not have survived. I believe that Sara, b. 1851 did not survive because Thomas & Jane had another daughter named Sarah b. 1861 in Nova Scotia.  I've found traces that indicate Esther Scott was living in Cape Breton in 1865.  The records here are not very reliable for that era - the first detailed census wasn't until 1871 and marriage, birth and death records can be sketchy.  I think that you are right Tati about Jane being the second wife - I wondered that myself because of the age gap in the children.  This leads to a question - what's the likelyhood that her daughter Jane was illegitimate? Was it usual for a widow to remarry using her maiden name or married name?  I've seen it both ways in records over here.

Michael - I really appreciate your replies and all the information you've provided.  The knowledge of the place names, relationships and possibilities will be very helpful.

Alan:  Thank you so much for the baptismal records for Jane - I'm not sure what you mean about needing the marriage cert to confirm father's name.  Either of these could be my Jane but wondering - did shoemakers tend to intermarry with miners or were they in a different ummm social class?

Janis:  Thank you!  This could well be my Thomas.  I've found a family tree that shows Mark Scott (christened May, 1787 in Longbenton) marrying Margaret Charlton in 1807 at All Saints, Newcastle; their children include Esther, James, Ann and Thomas but don't have DOBs. Is Longbenton near to Gosforth?

Would anyone have any advice on how to find further info about Jane Eltringham's daughter Jane and if Jane Sr. was married previously?  I'm descended from Jane Jr. so this adds a definite twist to the family history.  Many thanks to everyone!

I modified my answer so you might want to look at it again.

Also Baptism Ryton:  Jane Eltringham 5 Nov 1837 d/o Jane, Crawcrook  (no father usually means Jane sr. was unmarried)

An English marriage certificate will have both parties father's names and occupations.  It will also given the status--bachelor, spinster, widowed, divorced.

 kkhh,

 The parishes of Longbenton and Gosforth were neighbours.

 See very useful map of Northumberland's parishes.

www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/nblmap

 The map is interactive and reveals an A-Z of every parish.

The River Tyne , in the main, marked the border between the counties of Northumberland and Durham. The City of Newcastle comprised the four parishes of St John's. St Andrew's, St Nicholas's and All Saints.

~~~~~~~~---
In my view there would not have been a great social divide between shoemakers and pitmen. Both relied on each other.
Give us something that we can get our teeth into and no telling what we can come up with.
Baptisms Longbenton:
3 Esthers but one that might be 3 yrs old  in the 1841 census
Esther Scott 18 Feb 1838 d/o Thomas and Elizabeth
There is an Esther Scott birth registration for 1838 Mar ¼ Tynemouth 25 343  this would give the mother's maiden name
