Assembling Roller Skates?
« on: Wednesday 16 June 10 22:42 BST (UK) »
Am I right in reading this as "Assembling Roller Skates"? I had no idea this industry even existed.  :o Were there roller skate factories in Birmingham? Was roller skating very popular in 1911?

Thanks,
Alexander

There is some  interesting info on Wikipedia about roller skating. Apparently it was first invented in Holland in the 1760's and  improved wheels were invented in 1876 in Birmingham.

Hi Nashua & Stan,

Thanks for your replies. Seeing as Phillips is the only roller skate manufacturer in Birmingham I imagine that's where Edwin would have worked. I wonder whether Phillips Roller Skate Co was part of Phillips Cycles?

Thanks,
Alexander

AS A VINTAGE BRITISH BICYCLE COLLECTOR, HISTORIAN, AUTHOR AND MAD DEVOTEE WITH 36 YEARS EXPERIENCE I CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS SUBJECT.

THE J.A. PHILLIPS CYCLE COMPANY, FROM THEIR CREDENDA WORKS FACTORY WAS A HUGE MANUFACTURER WITH AN AWESOME AND INCREDIBLE RICH HISTORY OF BEING A LARGE SUPPLIER OF PHILLIPS BICYCLES AND A NOTEWORTHY MANUFACTURER OF PUSH BICYCLE PEDALS AND ALL PARTS RELATED TO THE CYCLE TRADE.

THIS INCLUDED WELL MADE AND POPULAR  PHILLIPS ROLLER SKATES.

PHILLIPS BICYCLES, NO MATTER HOW TATTY OR USED  ARE CURRENTLY BEING, COLLECTED, SOUGHT AFTER, FIXED UP, RESTORED, RIDDEN, LOVED, BOUGHT, SOLD, TRADED, WORLDWIDE.  THE ORIGINAL OLD SLOGAN:  "RENOWN THE WORLD OVER"  IS STILL TRUE TODAY.
THE PHILLIPS BICYCLES, ALL TYPES AND STYLES AND MODELS ARE IN DEMAND AND COLLECTED AND RESTORED AND LOVED AND HIGH PRICES ARE PAID FROM PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER  BY PEOPLE WHO LOVE THESE BRITISH BICYCLES AND IT IS NOT UNCOMMON FOR SOMEBODY TO DRIVE MANY MILES TO COME TO YOUR HOME TO PURCHASE AND COLLECT FROM YOU THE OLD PHILLIPS BICYCLE YOU HAD ADVERTISED FOR SALE. INSTEAD OF SHIPPING THE BICYCLE THE INDIVIDUAL DROVE TO COLLECT IT IN PERSON SO AS NOT TO RISK THE OLD PHILLIPS BICYCLE BEING SCRATCHED OR DAMAGED IN TRANSIT.  THIS IS THE UNIQUE MINDSET OF THE BICYCLE COLLECTOR WHO CHERISHED AND APPRECIATES THE BRITISH PUSH BICYCLE, ACCESSORIES, MOTORIZED CYCLES AND PHILLIPS PANDA MOPEDS. THERE ARE LEGIONS OF LOYAL COLLECTORS AND RIDERS OF THE PHILLIPS PANDA MOPEDS AS WELL.  SO THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT COLLECTORS AND DEVOTEES OF PHILLIPS CYCLES.

WE ARE SORRY IT HAS GONE AWAY AND WISH IT WOULD RETURN, WE WANT TO BUY SPARE PARTS AND WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE OLD PHOTOS AND HEAR STORIES FROM PEOPLE WHO WORKED THERE.

THE PHILLIPS LION HAS MANY PEOPLE THE WORLD OVER WHO LOVE IT AND PAY CRAZY PRICES TO OWN ITEMS AND ACCESSORIES AND WHOLE BICYCLES  BEARING THE FAMOUS PHILLIPS TRADE MARK.  EVEN NOW I CORESPOND WITH A  GENTLEMAN FROM BRAZIL WHO WISHES TO BUY PHILLIPS NEWSREEL MAGAZINE BOOKLET PUBLICATIONS.

WARM REGARDS FROM THE U.S.A., WHERE OLD TATTY PHILLIPS BICYCLES  ARE SEARCHED FOR, RESTORED, AND RIDDEN WITH PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP AND IT IS REGARDED WITH HONOUR TO BE ABLE TO OWN ONE.

Birmingham, England was home to  many, many, very famous, much loved and collected bicycle manufacturers. The list is endless.   Please save the old push bicycles from tips, skips, rubbish collect kerbs, where ever  you can. Please preserve anything old bicycle.

They are desired for their parts or as whole cycles.
