Weaste Cemetary map help & abreviation?
« on: Thursday 17 June 10 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I have just found out where my Great Great Grandfather is Buried in Weaste Cemetery.
this is the information they gave me at age croft.
Plot 33 ,Grave number 1197.
Buried 27th sept 1905 burial number 210755

Here is a link to a PDF file of the cemetery can anyone who has been there or can understand it help me? am I right in thinking he is in the section that says Diss 33?  and does this mean its disused and probably nothing really to see ie grave stones?

Only I don't live in the area and, as I am disabled hubby has volunteered to visit for me.
Oops sorry forgot to put the link its http://www.salford.gov.uk/weastecemetery.htm
Thank you so much for your help  :)
Best wishes Rose

Hi Rose,

 :)

I think "Diss" means "Dissenters".  Which is another word for Non-Conformist, i.e., anyone who doesn't conform with the doctrines of the Established Church.  Cemeteries usually have sections for CofE, RC and Non-Conformist.

I am sorry I am not familiar with Weaste but I am sure you will get some more replies as to the likelihood of there being a headstone.

Luzzu was correct it does mean "dissenter" & the explanation of the meaning is correct also.
My father-in law was buried in the grave of his in-laws (probably because they couldn't afford a new grave). It is also in Weaste Cemetery in the dissenters part & from the map I would say not very far from the one you are trying to locate.
Unfortunately when we visited the cemetery we didn't find any stone to mark the grave & in fact there were not many stones intact. The ground was very uneven also.

Thank you everyone for the information.

I spoke the lady at age croft and she was very helpful and did some further research and said that they have a grave stone for that grave she told me when he was buried etc
If its  still their though from what you say is another thing.

I looked at the cemetery on google maps and thought the ground looked very different in that section..
At least I know what to expect thank you both very much.
Have a good weekend  :)

Thank you everyone for your help, I was very lucky for once, there was a stone plus both wives and two children as well as the Husband/ Father all there.
I have posted a photo with an inquiry in the Grave stone "section" if anyone would like a peep, again thank you all very much :)
