Marriage certificate
« on: Thursday 17 June 10 22:43 BST (UK) »
I expect that you have been asked this many times - but here goes anyway!

My grandmother's sister - therefore my mother's aunt -according to the IGI Jeremiah Austin married Emily Pennicott 30 January 1892 in Durban, Natal, South Africa.

It was always known that Emily went to live in South Africa and married 'Jerry Austin' - but I would like to know where I could obtain a marriage certificate for this couple?

It was always assumed in my generation of the family that Jerry came from the next village in Sussex, where there were a number of Austins, but I now have my doubts, and believe that perhaps he was born in South Africa, and Emily met him whilst living/working there.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards, Anna

Hi Anna,
It is not an easy task to find marriage certs - copies of the church registers are held on file in Durban so if I go in it would be easy to find it. However it is unlikely to give parents names on that. Jeremiah died in 1911 and it would be best to order his death notice from NAAIRS and this should contain his birth place and parents if filled in correctly. It may also have a will attached.

That's super Ruth.  How do I go about ordering a death certificate from NAAIRS?; and what does NAAIRS mean?

Sorry to be so dense!  South Africa is all new to me, although I have been doing family history for over 15 years now, but all in the UK.

What sort of information is on the marriage certificate anyway?

Regards, Anna

Sorry to be bombarding you with messages.

It would be interesting to confirm the date of the Austin/Pennicott marriage.  I know that IGI are pretty good, but they do sometimes get the dates wrong.

If this incurs any cost to you please let me know.

Anna

Sorry.  What's a sticky?

I did a Google on NAAIRS and found out what that means.  Do I email them for a death certificate for Jeremiah Austin?

Hello again Ruth,

I have looked through all that you have told me and have sent an email to the Durban archivist hoping that he will be able to furnish me with a copy of Jeremiah Austin's death notice.

As regards the marriage of Jeremiah Austin and Emily Pennicott you say that it will not be difficult to find this on the church registers; I would be interested to know which church they were married in.  Thank you.

I have a couple of letters that Emily sent to my mother just before and during WW11 and the address on each one is 39, Assembly Road, Wentworth, Durban.  I used the Google maps and see that it is still there!!

I just thought that you might like to know my observation.

Many thanks once again,    Anna
