My husband has some Fiddler as well...  ;D and there may be something if the ancestor could afford headstones...but if not, wooden crosses have not survived the Prairie elements,I am afraid...Let's hope that it's drier than it is now, or hopping about in the mud will be req'd...
Yes you have quite the family bkgd. Fiddler the surveyor, and Moar a big fur trade name...HBC???

So you have all the basic information, then,  just want the little extras???

As I said you may have allowed enough time...depending on what you are seeking...and are prepared if going to the archives by getting as many microfilm numbers and such as you can ahead of time  ... :D

Hi pross,

Before I make a trip like the one you are about to go on, I make a list of things I want to find and the places where I will likely find them. Once the list is done I prioritize the list and then create a "road map" in which I will tackle the high priority items first. However, I do take into consideration the location of these places too, to make the most out the the trip :-) I have found google maps and such very helpful in doing this.Hope that helps.

Hi JDC,
Yes I do all those things but until I get to find what is available and how to get to each of the items on the wish list, cannot prioritise!
I am not a beginner have worked in Family History Centre for best part of 15 years.
Canada has not been so easy..well not in early part of my research....much more available these days, have always had wonderful generous helpers if I have posted a request for help.
Again Thanks for your advise as it all helps keep one on track.

A Richards family had a grist mill located right behind the church in St. Andrews, but it is no longer there.

I would contact them for the cemetery information if you haven't already. You may need permission anyway to enter the grounds  http://www.redrivernorthtourism.com/historical.htm

My suggestion would be to definitely rent a car.  J.J.

If working from a distance, a good place to start is The Manitoba Genealogical Society.  The web site is  www.mbgenealogy.com/ They will be able to answer all your questions.

I can personally vouch for Manitoba Archives Their web site is  www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/

There is / was a lady there called Evelyn West and she could not have been more helpful.  She knew what we wanted in advance and when we got there,
she had already laid out the relevant documents. She then made copies for us of the ones we were interested in.

Manitoba's motto is  "Friendly Manitoba"  They are not kidding !!

It is almost essential to rent a car.  Manitoba is not the biggest Province in Canada and getting around the city is much easier than most cities.  Nevertheless, I don't think you will regret having a car at your disposal.

I didn't fancy driving on the 'wrong' side of the road, and used metro in cities that had it, and buses in those that didn't ... the bus drivers were MOST helpful and friendly and the buses punctual ...

I spent the first 40 years of my life in Scotland, and I now live near Toronto.

As far as Winnipeg is concerned..........Don't worry about it.
They are some of the friendliest and most courteous people I have ever known, and I have travelled quite a bit.

J.J.    How about some confirmation here ???????

Hi all,
Thank you all for your most helpfull comments, it has been very greatfully received.
Have been having problems coordinating our travel and find we now have to deferr to earlier in new year, this will now enable much needed time and preparation with a better chance of obtaining and doing the things needed.
Thanks so much for your great help as always on RootsChat.

If you are going to Winnipeg in the new year, remember that Winnipeg (so I was told) is the hottest ... and the coldest city in Canada !
