Rouston?
« on: Friday 18 June 10 11:27 BST (UK) »
I have found a parish entry for a marriage in Staveley in 1624 between Robert Alcroft and Mary Marshall and it says the bride's abode was Rouston. Has anyone heard of this place in connection to Derbyshire? I know place names change or disappear but I can't find it anywhere, apart from a Rowston in Lincolnshire.

Anyone got any ideas?

Maybe it's too small to appear on a modern map.

Try looking for tiny hamlets on a contemporary map.?

I've googled Rouston and I've just looked on Genuki in Derbyshire & Lincolnshire and Rowston, Lincs is the closest I can get to it. It might just have to remain one of those annoying family history mysteries!

Thanks Charlotte

Hello Anna,

Are you looking at a transcript or the actual Parish Register?

My suggestion is it could be Royston i.e. Royston Green, Nr. Parwich, Derbyshire.

Good Luck

I've only seen the trancript I'm afraid. I've never heard of Royston Green and have just looked up Parwich up on the map and it's not that far away from Staveley. Although I believe there is also a Royston in Yorkshire as well.
Thanks Spendlove, it's always good to get advice from people with local knowledge.

Hi

Could it be

RAUNSTON
'Called at the time of the Conquest Ravenstune, was then the property of Nigel de Stafford. This village, though belonging to Derbyshire, is totally surrounded by Leicestershire; and lies about 3 miles south of Ashby-de-la Zouch...' In the Deanery of Repington.

All of these seem very plausible. Raunston is another place I've never heard of.

Thanks for the tip Ricky.
