Hi all

Think we have success  :D

I suggested to Kismet that she scanned from Irfanview and saved as a jpg there.

IT WORKED

Here is a small version of her 600dpi non-compressed scan

If anyone wants the large one, just PM me.

That's  pretty good, Irene  :D

I'll have a go at the big one but it will be a few days before I can get on to it now!

A tip for those who have problems with scanning:

* Download Irfanview, a free graphic prog at http://download.cnet.com/IrfanView/3000-2192_4-10021962.html?part=dl-IrfanView&subj=dl&tag=button

Then when it's up and running, go into it and:

*Select Twain Source in the File menu

* Then select your scanner in the options that come up

* Then in the File menu, select Aquire

(Your scanner dialogue will come up)

* Scan the image at 300-600dpi

*Then Save in Irfanview as jpg

A dialogue will come up - on the right there will be a slider menu - slide it to best and save

Thanks Gadget. ;D
I don't think my eyes will let me have another go :-\

Maybe Prue can add that as a sticky as we are getting so many bad scans these days

Last time I tried to be helpful and provide an idea of how Nathan looked for some reason the photo didn't load properly.

Here goes again........!

And can I just say thanks again to all of you who have taken the time and trouble to try to give me a decent copy of the photo of Nathan and child.  At least now I can scan in without compression - thanks to Gadget for that useful piece of info!

Irene, your restorations are wonderful - and personally I prefer the monochrome.  Thank you.

Kismet,

Was this originally monochrome? The reason I ask is, when I did my original clean, all I altered was the contrast and brightness - no colour was added, and yet colour shows through, or is it just staining? Just curious!

Hi Tony

I have no idea - I would have thought monochrome.

If my estimation is correct the young girl with my great grandfather is my grandmother, aged about 5 or 6, so it would have been taken in about 1890.

Was there colour photography about then?
