Hi Trudy

I'm only on my first coffee of the day so will read your other questiions later but the parents of Isabella were John Hornel and Margaret Thomson on her death cert (and are on the MI) so I'm not sure why you are still thinking it is a Janet.

Re finding a baptism or marriage for her - someone has suggested (and I can't think where I saw this ref) that only about 30% of the C of Scotland  baptism/marriage records have survived - for various reasons. This is especially the case with marriages as there were a number of different forms of marriage which were legal in Scotland and only the ones performed by a C of S minister woul be recorded anyway.

I think it is unlikely that you will find either a baptism or marriage for Isabella and you will therefore have to rely on the information from her death certificate and the MIs.

Thanks, Thank you so much for verifying that.  So her brothers are Robert, 1780, Margaret 1793 David 1789 and Sarah 1800.

Do you agree with this.

I would say, if all are happy, we have found the necessary outcome and I can take it as being so for my records.
Have a lovely 2nd cup on me.

a top of the day to you

There is a large gap between Robert in 1780 and David in 1789 which could well mean that there were other siblings (and, of course, Isabella)

I've been checking up on William Milligan to check for possible names from his side. It does look as if he's the son of Samuel Milligan and Agnes Rankin but would need further checks to confirm. If so,  their daughter Agnes would be named for her.

I wonder why Isabella and William don't appear together on the censuses  ???

Thanks, William and Isabella are together on the 1851 census, theylive in high Street, William is a houseproprietor and shoemaker.
Janet Milligan  is with her father in the 1851 census and with her husband Thomas Meredith in Liverpool in 1841, however his name is spelt Meridith on that  occasion. There is another possibility.  Janet Milligans brother John marries Margaret McMurray and has some children and he is a ships carpenter, so maybe William is her nephew.  I know the family seem to end up in Liverpool, particulary West Derby, and a couple of other places.

is it possible to find an entry for William Milligan and Isabella for the 1841 census.  She dies in 1860 so she wont be in the 1861 census. But also for William Milligan for the 1871 census.

Thanks for all the efforts.

Hi

In 1841 Isabella is in High Street, Kirkcudbright:

Milligan
Isabella, 55, wife of William Milligan, Shoemaker, b. Kirkcudbrightshire
Sarah, 13, b. -do-

This might be William  in Liverpool

HO107/565/bk3/14/21

Milligan
William, 50, shoemaker, b. Scotland
John, 20, carpenter, b. -do-
William, 15ap. shoemaker, b. -do-

In 1851, William is on his own in High Street, Kirkcudbright with the Merediths.

:D  thank you so much Gadget.
I think we have solved the Milligan story in Kirkcudbright except, would you agree that William Milligan, husband of Isabella, mum is Agnes

Did he have any other siblings.

Regards

Hi Trudy

I think it was Agnes but can't find a death cert in Scotland for him - did he die in Liverpool? If so, the English death certs wouldn't give his parents  :(

I've not looked into his side of  the family so far but will investigate, if you'd like  :)

I see in the Kirkcudbright MIs that there is a grave for Samuel Milligan and Agnes Ranken very close to William and Isabella's:

Quote
343 Samuel Milligan, Kirkcudbright d. 20.12 1832 72 imo w Agnes Ranken 21.5.1822 62, Jas Milligan 6.12.1850 67, their son John 29. 1. 1866 66

I am assuming that James and John were sons of Samuel and Agnes

You have the Kirkcudbright MIs, I believe, and there are quite a few Milligan's listed in there with names that are repeated in William and Isabella's children. If you have time, it might be worth going through them to see if you can see connections.
