Andrew & James Harrower Pit Death 1901
« on: Saturday 19 June 10 21:15 BST (UK) »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help or point me in the right direction.

I decided to start branching out and looked into the brothers of my great grandfather John Harrower and came across two of his brothers who were killed on the same day

Andrew Harrower died aged 15 on 8th April 1901 and James Harrower died aged 23 at the same time at the same accident at Devonbank Pit Alloa.  Their is an RCE for James that states Furnacebank Pit and states that a quantity of coal fell on him.

I thought there would have something online but cannot find anything and will try local library in Alloa on Monday but wondered if anyone can help

Thanks

Steven

Great Monica thanks for that next step is the local papers - can't believe 2 brothers died at the same time

Another brother Thomas died 26/11/1937 again in a pit when a stone fell on top of him.  Unlucky family thats for sure

Dangerous occupation for sure  :-\

If you haven't come across this site, a really useful one http://scottishmining.co.uk/5.html This is the main page from where I got the 1901 accident details.

Thanks for the sites Monica and Gortonboy.  Any idea why I can't find Thomas in 1937.  According to his death certificate he died on 26/11/1937 and according to RCE it again was referred to Procurator Fiscal dated 21/12/1937 - looks like he died at Sauchie when large stone fell on top of him.

Also another brother Charles died on 30/6/1911 aged 16 and another Robert died 30/6/1937.  5 brothers in total and the only one who survived was my great grandfather John Harrower who I think died 1957 but no image available yet on SCotalnds People

Lucky white heather not!!!  Just found out that John Harrower (my grandfather) lost a son in 1926 to another Pit accident when a boulder fell on him.

Thats now 4 family members so far killed in the pit and another 3 of pit related illnesses!!!

I knew there were some deaths but this must have been so awful for the families

Can't see anything on the 1926 death.  Name is James Harrower and he was 16 and son of John Harrower.  He died on 13/4/1926
