Cumbria FHS pre-1986 article J V Harrison
« on: Monday 21 June 10 12:33 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate evidence for the marriage of my gt-gt grandparents who were apparently married at Gretna Green on 30th June 1849. They are not listed in the Achievements Gretna website, although a sister is there.

I have been informed by a distant cousin that the marriage was recorded in a Cumbria FHS newsletter article by J V Harrison - she adds the comment "this would be before 1986".

My ancestors John Parker and Mary Armstrong were from Knarsdale. Mary's brother Robert Armstrong was said to have married Sarah Bailes on the same day.

Since the Carlisle Records Office is currently closed, can anyone suggest how I might locate and/or search pre-1986 FHS newsletters.

Thanks,
Kath

Hi Kath,

I don't  know whether or not they have back issues of Cumbria FHS newsletters but there are other Record Offices in Cumbria.

Hi kath24, welcome to Rootschat :)

I suspect this is what you're after.

1849 June 30   John Parker, single person and Mary Armstrong single person, both of
   p. Knaresdale Northd. marr. at Allinsons Bank Toll House, p .Gretna by
John Murray,    Wtns. Hugh Armstrong, Jane Murray.

No sign of the other one.

This was found in the "Members only" section of the Cumb FHS website.  It was the Aug 1984 Newsletter.

Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi Geoff

Thank you so much for your quick reply. The witness Hugh Armstrong was probably Mary's brother and twin of Robert who was supposed to have made the journey at the same time.

Interesting to know that this info is available online. As a result I have now subscribed to Cumbria FHS  ... who knows what other goodies I have been missing.

Thanks again  :)
