Irish Relitives No idea where to start.. (Crowe/Hartling)
« on: Wednesday 23 June 10 17:46 BST (UK) »
I honestly have no  idea where to start learning about my family my immediate family seems to know nothing about our origins. My family name is Crowe and Hartling and all I know about it is Crowe is Irish. My grandmother is E. H. (living person name removed)  and Grandfather is Lee Crowe who is no longer with us. I know they came over to Canada before WW1.

Does anyone think I could find anything else about my family?

Do you have any names, dates and locations ?

It depends on the dates involved where you will need to look but the 1901 and 1911 census returns are available online (free) and full civil records began in Ireland in 1864.

Welcome to Rootschat. I've moved this thread to Ireland-General board since you aren't sure of where in Ireland your family came from. We aren't allowed to post details of living people but there are lots of online resources that might help find more about your family.
Your grandparents' marriage certificate should, hopefully, list their parents' names and perhaps their ages or birthdates.
The index to Irish civil registrations is online (free) but searching for 'Lee Crowe' brings up only 1 result- Louis Roland Lee Crowe Apr./June 1911 Dublin North registration district. However, it's possible that Lee is a nickname and he would be known by another name in official records.
Do you know where the family settled in Canada?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

You will need to start with:
a possible/probable date of birth for both E. and Lee and if they were born in Ireland
their actual names (e.g. E could be extended as E, Lee could be Leo etc.)
Could Hartling be a different name originally?
if you can find a possible location they came from

If they were alive before 1911 there are two posible Crowes listed on the 1911 census:
Lewis Lee Crowe aged under one month! He is listed with siblings parents and others
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Clontarf_West/Hollybrook_Road/5707/

William Leo Crowe aged two months He is listed with siblings parents and others
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Glasnevin/Carlingford_Terrace/1273871/

There are no Hartlings listed in 1911 or 1901 but the name may have altered - there are a few Hartings and many named Harte, Hartly, Hartley, etc.
Kearney & Bourke/ Johns & Fox/ Mannion & Finan/ Donohoe & Curley
